The Empty Chair by the Window: Finding Strength in Loneliness

The heart of The Empty Chair by the Window is the reminder that loneliness does not mean you are alone. Even when life feels quiet or empty, God sits with us in the silence, understands what we cannot express, and comforts the places no one else sees. The lesson is simple but powerful. You are never abandoned. The One who promised “I am with you always” remains by your side, especially in your loneliest moments.

Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

There was an older man who kept an empty chair by his window. Every morning, he would sit beside it, watching the world move on without him. Families walked by. Friends laughed together. Life seemed full for everyone else, but his days felt quiet and hollow.

One afternoon, a neighbor asked him, “Why do you keep that empty chair there?”

He smiled softly and said, “It reminds me that I am not as alone as I feel. I imagine Someone sitting there who listens when I speak, who understands my silence, and who stays even when others leave.”

The neighbor looked puzzled. “Who do you imagine sitting there?”

The man replied, “The One who promised, I am with you always. I cannot see Him, but I feel His presence. And somehow, that empty chair no longer feels empty.”

Loneliness is not just the absence of people.

It is the absence of connection, understanding, and presence.

But you are not unseen.

You are not forgotten.

You are not walking through life alone.

God is closer than your breath. He listens when no one else does. He understands what you cannot put into words. And He sits with you in the quiet moments when the world feels far away.
