Before you can value something you must understand what it is. And most people have never been given an honest answer to the most basic question about prayer. What is it actually for?

What Is Prayer?
Prayer is one of the most talked about and least understood subjects in the whole of Christianity. Most people have a vague sense that it involves speaking to God. But that barely scratches the surface of what is actually happening when a human being genuinely prays. To understand prayer properly you need to understand two things simultaneously. What God designed prayer to do for him and what God designed prayer to do for you.
When God created the earth he gave its governance and stewardship to human beings. Genesis 1:28 in the NIV says God blessed them and said to them, be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. God gave humanity dominion. Authority. The right to govern the earth. And that arrangement means something profound that most believers have never fully absorbed. God, by his own sovereign design, chose to operate on the earth primarily through the agreement and the invitation of the people he placed here. He is not absent from the earth. But he deliberately limited himself to work through human partnership rather than overriding human authority at every turn. Prayer is therefore one of the primary mechanisms by which human beings invite God to intervene, to operate and to exercise his power in the affairs of the earth. When you pray you are not reminding God of something he forgot. You are giving him legal access, through your willing agreement, to move in the situations and the lives that fall within your sphere of authority and concern.
"I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. I also tell you this: if two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you."

But prayer is also, at its simplest and most personal level, communication with God. It is how you connect daily to the source of everything you need. Just as a branch draws its life and its fruit-bearing capacity from its connection to the vine, a believer draws spiritual strength, wisdom, peace, direction and power from their connection to God through daily prayer. Disconnect from the vine and the branch eventually withers, not because it is a bad branch, but because it is not designed to sustain itself independently. John 15:5 in the NLT says I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Prayer is remaining. It is the daily, deliberate act of staying connected to the one who is the source of everything your life is meant to produce.
Five Benefits of Praying Daily
1. You experience a peace that no circumstance can take away
Philippians 4:6-7 is one of the most direct promises in the New Testament. When you bring everything to God with prayer and thanksgiving the peace of God, which exceeds anything you can understand, will guard your heart and mind. That peace is not produced by your circumstances improving. It is produced by the act of prayer itself. The person who prays daily carries a settled interior stability that no external pressure can fully reach. Not because their life is without difficulty but because they have a daily practice of releasing what they cannot control into the hands of the one who can.
2. You receive daily direction for your life
Isaiah 30:21 in the NKJV says your ears shall hear a word behind you saying this is the way, walk in it. That divine direction requires proximity. You cannot hear a quiet voice from a great distance. The person who prays daily maintains the closeness to God that keeps them within hearing range of the guidance they are constantly being offered. Direction missed is almost always direction that was given to someone who was not close enough to hear it. Daily prayer closes that distance every single morning before the day begins.

3. You release God's power into situations that cannot be changed any other way
James 5:16 in the NLT says the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. It is not the person who is powerful. It is the prayer that releases God's power into a situation. God changes things through prayer. He healed the sick through prayer. He ended droughts through prayer. He opened prison doors through prayer. He brought entire cities to repentance through prayer. Acts 12 records the church praying for Peter while he was in prison and an angel appearing in his cell and leading him out. The circumstances did not change themselves. God changed them in response to his people praying. That same power is available to you in the specific situation you are facing today, but it is accessed through prayer and not by any other means.
4. You are strengthened in ways that the world cannot explain
Isaiah 40:31 in the NKJV says those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Waiting on the Lord is an active form of prayer, a deliberate, attentive coming before God that produces a supernatural renewal of strength. The person who prays daily is not simply a person who feels religious in the morning. They are a person who draws daily on a source of strength that no natural resource can replicate. Tiredness, discouragement, anxiety and the weight of accumulated pressure all yield to a daily prayer life in ways that no other practice can produce.
5. You build a relationship with God rather than a religion about God
The Amplified Bible's rendering of Matthew 6:6 says when you pray go into your most private room and closing the door pray to your Father who is in secret. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you in the open. The word Father in that verse is the whole point. Not religious authority. Not cosmic principle. Father. Daily prayer is the practice of bringing the whole of your life, every ordinary hour and every difficult situation, before a Father who knows you by name, who delights in you specifically and who has made himself available to you personally every single day. That relationship, maintained through daily prayer across months and years, produces a quality of intimacy with God that nothing else in the Christian life can replace or replicate.
So the Light of the World word for today is this. Prayer is not a religious exercise. It is the most powerful thing a human being can do. It is how you give God access to the situations he is waiting to move in. It is how you stay connected to the source of everything your life needs to produce. And it is the daily practice that builds the relationship with your Father that nothing else in your Christian life can replace. Do not treat it as the spare tyre. Make it the engine. Begin today.
