Why Me? Part 2

Light of the World Today

You know God placed you here with intention. Part 2 deals with the harder question. What do you do when the place he has positioned you in feels nothing like the promise he gave you?

"For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago."

Ephesians 2:10 NLT

Part 1 of this devotion established something foundational and deeply personal. Your existence is not accidental. God formed you before the world knew your name. He approved of you, consecrated you and placed you exactly where you are with full knowledge of what he intended to produce through your life in this specific location at this specific moment in history. That truth is real. It is scripturally grounded. And it raises an honest question that most devotions do not address. What happens when the place you have been positioned in does not look like the plan God promised? When the why me question is not one of wonder but of weariness. When the family, the city, the season or the circumstance you were placed in feels less like a divine appointment and more like a divine oversight.

That tension is not a sign that God made a mistake. It is almost always a sign that the plan is bigger than the current chapter. And the person who learns to hold both the promise and the pressure simultaneously, without letting the pressure cancel the promise, is the person who eventually sees why they were placed where they were placed.

When the Placement Feels Like a Punishment

Joseph was positioned by God with remarkable precision. But when you follow the trajectory of where that positioning took him, the first few chapters look nothing like the final one. The coat of many colours was the visible sign of his father's favour. The dreams were the early disclosure of the purpose. And the very next thing that happened was the pit. Then the slave market. Then Potiphar's house. Then the prison. Then the forgotten years. If Joseph had evaluated his placement by the conditions he was living in rather than by the God who was guiding the journey, he would have had every reason to conclude that the promise had been cancelled and the positioning was, in fact, a punishment.

But Genesis 39:2-3 in the NIV says the Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favour. The Lord was with him in the pit chapter. The Lord was with him in the Potiphar chapter. The Lord was with him in the prison chapter. The presence of God was not contingent on the pleasantness of the location. And the plan was advancing through every chapter that looked from the inside like a detour.

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people."

Genesis 50:20 NLT

Genesis 50:20 is the verse Joseph spoke when he could finally see the whole picture. What his brothers intended as harm, God intended as strategic positioning. The pit was not a punishment. It was the first corridor on the way to the palace. The prison was not an abandonment. It was the preparation room for the platform. And the question why me that must have risen in Joseph during those years of unjust suffering was eventually answered not with an explanation but with a revelation of the scale of what the placement had been producing all along.

The Good Things Were Planned Before the Circumstances Were Difficult

Ephesians 2:10 in the NLT says he has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. The good things were planned long ago. Before the difficult circumstance arrived. Before the placement felt uncomfortable. Before the season felt confusing. The good things were already planned. Which means the current difficulty you are navigating is not operating outside of the plan. It is operating within it. The good things that were planned long ago are still on the agenda. The uncomfortable placement has not altered the plan. It is part of the delivery mechanism of the plan.

This is one of the most practically stabilising truths available to a person who is asking why me from inside a season that makes no obvious sense. The masterpiece was designed before the canvas looked like anything recognisable. The sculptor saw the finished form before the first chip of stone fell away. And the God who planned the good things for your life long ago has not revised that plan because the current chapter is difficult. He is working the current chapter into the plan he always had.

Three Things to Do When Why Me Feels Like a Burden

1. Stay faithful in the current chapter regardless of how it looks

Luke 16:10 in the NIV says whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. Joseph managed Potiphar's estate as faithfully as he later managed the granaries of Egypt. The scale was different. The faithfulness was identical. The person who is asking why me while simultaneously being unfaithful to what the current chapter is asking of them is the person whose why will remain unanswered for longer than it needs to be. Faithfulness in the current placement is not separate from the discovery of the why. It is the primary pathway toward it.

2. Look for who in your current location needs what only you carry

Part 1 established that you are in your current location because someone needs the grace you carry. That person is almost certainly already in your life. The colleague who keeps coming back to you with questions that do not feel like work questions. The neighbour whose circumstances keep surfacing in your prayer. The family member whose specific difficulty maps onto something in your experience that no one else around them has lived through. Your why is very often already visible in the people who are drawn to what you carry. Pay attention to who those people are. They are often the clearest indication of the specific assignment your placement was designed to serve.

"And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

3. Trust the planner more than you trust the chapter

Proverbs 3:5-6 in the NLT says trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take. Your own understanding of why you are where you are is limited to what is visible from inside the chapter you are currently living. But the one who planned your placement sees every chapter simultaneously. He knows what the difficult placement is producing. He knows who the current season is preparing you to serve. He knows which turn is coming that will make the previous route suddenly make sense. Trust the planner with the parts of the plan that are not yet visible to you. Because Jeremiah 29:11 was not a promise made to comfortable people. It was a promise made to people in exile who could not see how the story would resolve. And it was fulfilled completely.

So the Light of the World word for today is this. The why me that feels like a burden is often the same why me that becomes a testimony. Joseph could not see the throne from the pit. Esther could not see the nation she would save from the palace corridor. But God could see both from where he was standing. The good things were planned long ago. The placement was intentional. The current chapter is not the whole story. Stay faithful. Serve the person in front of you. Trust the planner with what you cannot yet see. And know that the one who wrote the beginning of your story has already written the end.
