Light of the World Today

The enemy never sleeps. But he is not fighting from a position of power. He is fighting from a position of fury. And understanding why changes everything about how you face him.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith."

1 Peter 5:8-9 NKJV

Before we deal with what regular fasting does to the power of darkness, you need to understand something that most believers have never been clearly taught. The devil is not fighting you from a position of strength. He is fighting you from a position of rage. And there is a world of difference between those two things. A person who fights from strength has options and leverage. A person who fights from rage has neither. They fight with desperation rather than strategy, with intensity rather than authority. Understanding why Satan operates from that specific posture is one of the most liberating and the most practically empowering truths in all of Scripture.

Why Satan Never Sleeps: The Story Behind the Rage

Ezekiel 28:13-15 in the NIV gives us the most detailed biblical picture of what Lucifer was before his fall. You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone adorned you. Your settings and mountings were made of gold. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mountain of God. You walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. He was not a minor celestial being. He was the anointed guardian cherub. The most highly positioned created being in the entire order of heaven. He was clothed in precious stones. He walked in the presence of God on the holy mountain. He led worship in the highest realms of the created order. He was placed at the very right hand of glory itself.

Isaiah 14:12-15 in the NLT records what happened next. How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world. For you said to yourself, I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God's stars. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High. Instead, you will be brought down to the place of the dead, down to its lowest depths. Pride removed him. The desire to be God rather than to serve God was the sin that expelled him from the position he held. He lost everything. The covering stones. The access to the holy mountain. The anointing. The right hand position. All of it gone, permanently, irreversibly, in a moment of catastrophic pride.

"Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short."

Revelation 12:12 NIV

Revelation 12:12 in the NIV explains his current posture with devastating clarity. The devil has gone down to you. He is filled with fury because he knows that his time is short. Not filled with authority. Not filled with legitimate power. Filled with fury. He is the most furious creature in the created order because he lost what he can never recover. And the specific object of that fury, the thing that enrages him beyond every other provocation, is you. Because through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ you now occupy the position that was once his. Ephesians 2:6 in the NIV says God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. The seat that Lucifer lost, the position of honour in the heavenly realms at the right hand of glory, has been given through Christ to redeemed humanity. He lost the position. You received it. And he has never recovered from the fury that truth produces in him.

Your Rights and Authority Over Him: What the Bible Actually Says

Most believers live significantly below the level of authority that Scripture says they carry. Not because the authority is unavailable. Because it has not been taught, believed and exercised. Here is what God's Word actually says about your position and your rights in Christ.

You have authority over all the power of the enemy

Luke 10:19 in the NKJV says behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. All the power of the enemy. Not some of it. Not the minor expressions of it. All. The authority given by Jesus to his disciples has been extended through his resurrection to every believer who walks in genuine faith and genuine submission to God.

You are seated above every spiritual force of darkness

Ephesians 1:20-21 in the NLT says God seated Christ at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else not only in this world but also in the world to come. And because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, you share that positional authority. You are not beneath your circumstances. You are seated above them in the one who is above every name that can be named.

The name of Jesus is your legal weapon

Philippians 2:9-10 in the NLT says God elevated him to the place of highest honour and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth. Every knee. Including the one who once led worship in heaven and now operates in the realm under the earth. The name is not a magic word. It is the legal authority of the one who holds the title deed to all creation. When you pray in that name from a position of genuine faith and genuine submission, you are exercising the most powerful legal authority in the universe.

The blood of Jesus silences the accuser

Revelation 12:11 in the NKJV says they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. The blood of Jesus is not a historical fact for sentiment. It is a present-tense legal reality that invalidates every accusation the enemy brings against you before the throne of God. When Satan, the accuser of the brethren, brings a charge against you, the blood of Jesus is the only response required. It is already paid. The case is already closed. The verdict has already been rendered. You are acquitted. Permanently. And fasting combined with prayer keeps you in the conscious, active awareness of that reality in a way that the unburdened routine life does not.

What Regular Fasting Does to the Power of Darkness

Isaiah 58:6 in the AMP says is this not the fast which I choose, to undo the bonds of wickedness, to tear to pieces the ropes of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free and break apart every burdening yoke? The language is the language of warfare. Bonds undone. Ropes torn to pieces. Yokes broken apart. These are the specific effects of the fast that God has chosen on the structures of darkness that have been maintaining oppression in specific areas of a person's life, family or situation. The person who fasts regularly is not merely engaging in a personal spiritual discipline. They are regularly and systematically dismantling the spiritual infrastructure that the enemy has been building in and around their life. Every fast is a strike on a specific spiritual structure. And the accumulated effect of regular fasting over months and years is a life where the enemy simply has less and less operational space because it keeps being taken from him.

Psalm 91:10-11 in the NLT says no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. That covering, that angelic protection over your life, your family and your home, is one of the practical outcomes of a life that is consistently positioned in prayer and fasting before God. The person who lives under that covering is not protected because they have been lucky. They are protected because the spiritual environment around their life has been maintained by prayer, by the Word and by fasting in a way that keeps the enemy's access points closed. Accidents that were meant to claim lives are deflected. Illnesses that were assignments against the body are turned back. Situations that were designed to destroy families are dismantled before they can reach full expression. Not because trouble never comes near a praying fasting person. But because the God who orders the angels to protect them is faithful to the covenant that their prayer and fasting sustains.

So the Light of the World word for today is this. Satan is furious because you hold the position he lost. You are seated where he used to stand. You carry the authority he forfeited. And he knows it. Which is precisely why the person who understands their authority in Christ and maintains it through daily prayer and regular fasting is the person he works hardest to keep distracted, discouraged and prayerless. Do not give him that satisfaction. Take your seat. Exercise your authority. Fast with purpose. And remind the enemy daily of exactly what he lost when he lost it to you.

Memory verse for today

"They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."

Revelation 12:11 NKJV

A Prayer for Today

Father, I come before you today from the position that the blood of Jesus purchased for me. I am seated with Christ in heavenly realms far above every ruler, authority and power. I am not beneath my circumstances. I am above them in him. I exercise today the authority that Luke 10:19 declares is mine over all the power of the enemy. I declare the blood of Jesus over my life, my family and my home. I engage in the fast that God has chosen, to undo the bonds, to tear the ropes and to break every yoke that has been operating in areas of my life and the lives of those I carry before you. Order your angels to encamp around me. Let no evil assignment reach what your blood has covered. And let the devil find no foothold, no access and no ground to stand on in anything that belongs to me in Christ. In Jesus name, Amen.

— Amen

Reflection

  • 1Question 1 Revelation 12:12 says the devil is filled with fury because he knows his time is short. He is not fighting from strength. He is fighting from desperation. How does knowing that Satan operates from rage and not authority change the way you face spiritual opposition in your life this week? "He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short." Revelation 12:12 NIV
  • 2Luke 10:19 says you have been given authority over all the power of the enemy. Ephesians 2:6 says you are already seated with Christ above every spiritual force. If those two things are true right now in your life, which specific situation are you currently treating as though they were not? What would change if you engaged that situation from your actual positional authority? "I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy." Luke 10:19 NKJV
  • 3Psalm 91 promises angelic protection and covering for the person who dwells in the secret place of the Most High. Is your current prayer and fasting life maintaining the spiritual environment around your life that keeps that covering active? What specific commitment to regular fasting would you make this week to begin building that spiritual discipline consistently? "No evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you." Psalm 91:10-11 NLT
