CHALLENGES PART 5

Light of the World Today

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." 2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV

Parts 2, 3 and 4 covered formation, opposition and consequence. Today is the fourth and the most quietly hopeful category of all. The challenge that comes as preparation. This is the difficulty that is not about correcting something you did wrong, not about building character through a general trial and not primarily about the enemy opposing your progress. It is specifically about God positioning you for something ahead that requires you to have walked through exactly what you are walking through right now. The difference between this category and formation is subtle but important. Formation builds character in general. Preparation builds the specific understanding, compassion or credibility that a specific future assignment requires.

The Preparation Principle: Why Difficulty Precedes Destiny

2 Corinthians 4:17 in the NIV says our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. The word achieving in that verse is important and often overlooked. The original Greek word is katergazomai. It means to work out, to produce, to bring about as a result. The trouble is not merely being endured. It is actively producing something. Specifically, an eternal weight of glory that is disproportionately greater than the trouble that produced it. The difficulty and the glory are causally connected. The glory that is coming is being produced by the difficulty that is present. You cannot separate them without losing the outcome.

The MSG renders 2 Corinthians 4:17 with particular clarity. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There is a lavish celebration being prepared. And the preparation season that precedes it is not accidental. It is specifically and intentionally calibrated to produce the person who is ready to step into what is coming with the depth, the understanding and the genuine credibility that only someone who walked through this specific difficulty could carry.

"These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us."

2 Corinthians 4:17 MSG

Biblical Example: David Before the Throne

David was anointed king by Samuel at approximately seventeen years old. He did not sit on the throne until he was thirty. The thirteen years between his anointing and his coronation were not empty waiting time. They were the most intense and the most specific preparation programme available for the job ahead. He killed the lion and the bear in isolation so that the confidence for Goliath was already formed before the crowd arrived. He served faithfully in Saul's court so that he understood the interior dynamics of a palace before he ran one. He lived in caves and wilderness so that the men who would later form his army found in him a leader who had genuinely suffered alongside them and not merely commanded from a distance.

Psalm 105:19 in the NLT says until the time came to fulfil his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph's character. That verse bridges the Joseph story and the David story with a single principle. Until the time came. There is a time coming. And the testing is specifically calibrated to fit the time. The difficulty you are in right now is not random. It may be the specific credential that the next chapter requires of you.

How to Apply This in Your Daily Life

Change the question from why to what for

Why is this happening to me keeps your attention on the difficulty. What is this preparing me for moves your attention toward the destination. Romans 8:28 in the NLT says God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose. Everything is being worked. Including this. The preparation challenge is most effectively navigated by the person who actively cooperates with what is being produced rather than simply surviving what is being experienced.

Do not waste the understanding the difficulty is giving you

The person walking through a preparation challenge is being given something that cannot be obtained any other way. A specific, ground-level, experiential understanding of what it is like to be in exactly this situation. That understanding is future currency. It will one day be the specific thing that makes you the most credible, the most compassionate and the most genuinely useful person available to someone else walking the same road. Do not just endure the experience. Mine it. Learn from it. Let it teach you. Because it is preparing both you and your testimony simultaneously.

Keep your eyes fixed on what is being prepared, not what is being endured

Hebrews 12:2 in the NLT says we do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross. Jesus endured the cross by keeping his attention on the joy that was on the other side of it. The person in a preparation challenge maintains the same posture. The difficulty is real. The preparation is real. And the glory that is being produced by it is more real and more permanent than either of them. Fix your eyes beyond the current difficulty to what it is producing. The celebration being prepared is lavish. And it is worth the preparation.

Conclusion

The preparation challenge is the one that connects your present difficulty to your future destiny. David's lion and bear prepared him for Goliath. His wilderness prepared him for the throne. The hard times, as the MSG says, are small potatoes compared to what is being prepared. Part 6 closes the series with the most important practical skill of all. How to diagnose which category your challenge belongs to and respond to it correctly every time.

A Prayer for Today

Father, I receive today the truth that this difficulty is achieving something. Something that far outweighs what I am currently experiencing. Let me cooperate with the preparation rather than simply endure the difficulty. Change my question from why to what for. Give me the eyes to see what this season is producing in me that my future will require. And let the joy of what is being prepared sustain me through what is being endured. In Jesus name, Amen.

— Amen

Reflection

  • 1David's years in the wilderness were specifically preparing him for the throne. Looking at your current difficulty, what specific understanding, compassion or credibility is it producing in you that a future chapter of your life is going to require? What would it look like to mine this season deliberately rather than simply endure it? "Until the time came to fulfil his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph's character." Psalm 105:19 NLT
