Light of the World Today
"Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." Nehemiah 4:14 NIV
Part 2 explored the challenge that comes as formation. Today covers the second category. The challenge that comes as opposition. This is the resistance that arrives specifically because you have started moving in the right direction. It is the pushback that surfaces when you begin building something that matters. The mockery, the discouragement, the unexpected obstacle that appears precisely after you commit to the assignment. And the person who understands this category stops interpreting resistance as a sign to stop and starts recognising it as confirmation that what they are doing is worth opposing.
Nehemiah: The Man Who Built Under Fire
Nehemiah 4 records a moment that every person pursuing a God-given assignment will recognise. Nehemiah had returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the broken city wall. Within days the opposition arrived. Sanballat and Tobiah mocked the work publicly. They threatened violence. They sent discouraging reports. They tried to pull Nehemiah away from the building through meetings and distractions. Every tactic was designed to do one thing. Stop the building.
Nehemiah's response is one of the most practically useful examples of handling opposition available in Scripture. He prayed and he posted guards. Nehemiah 4:9 in the NLT says we prayed to our God and guarded the wall day and night to protect ourselves. He did not choose between prayer and practical action. He did both simultaneously. And Nehemiah 4:17 records the builders working with one hand while holding a weapon with the other. They never stopped building. The opposition could not halt what it could not make them abandon.
"We prayed to our God and guarded the wall day and night to protect ourselves."

How to Apply This in Your Daily Life
Recognise opposition as confirmation, not condemnation
1 Peter 5:8 in the NLT says stay alert. Watch out for your great enemy the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. He does not prowl around the person who is sitting still and posing no threat to his territory. The opposition you are facing is very often the clearest available evidence that what you are doing matters. Nehemiah did not attract mockery when he was sitting in Persia. He attracted it the moment he started building. Treat your opposition the same way.
Pray first, then stay at your wall
Nehemiah's pattern was prayer then practical faithfulness. Not one or the other. When opposition arrives, the first response is prayer. Bring it to God specifically. Name what you are facing. Ask for wisdom, strength and clarity. Then go back to the work. Nehemiah 6:3 records him saying I am doing a great work and cannot come down. What a statement. I cannot come down. The opposition wanted to pull him into a meeting. He stayed on the wall. When distractions, discouraging voices and unnecessary demands try to pull you off your assignment, the most powerful response available is simply to stay at your wall.
Build in community, not in isolation
Nehemiah did not rebuild Jerusalem alone. He organised the people, posted them at the most vulnerable points of the wall and ensured everyone knew that if one section was attacked, the others would come. Ecclesiastes 4:12 in the NIV says though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Opposition is most effective against the isolated person. The person surrounded by genuine, praying, committed community is significantly harder to stop.
Conclusion
Resistance is not a red light. For Nehemiah it was confirmation that the wall was worth building. For you it may be exactly the same. Pray. Stay. Build. Do not come down. Part 4 closes the series with the remaining two categories and the practical response that turns every type of challenge into something God can use for your good and his glory.
