Light of the World Today
The question nobody admits to be struggling with until they cannot avoid it any longer.
"Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you."
1 Peter 4:12 NIV
If you have been a Christian for any length of time, you have already discovered the uncomfortable truth that receiving Jesus does not come with a guarantee of a smooth and uncomplicated life. The job loss still happens. The health scare still arrives. The relationship that mattered falls apart anyway. The financial pressure does not ease simply because you are now praying about it. And in those moments a deeply honest and entirely understandable question surfaces. Why? If God is good and I belong to him, why is this happening to me?
That question deserves a real answer. Not a religious platitude. Not a dismissive God is in control that lands without any explanation of what that actually means when the pain is present. A genuine, biblically grounded, practically useful answer that makes sense of what you are going through and gives you something solid to stand on in the middle of it. This four-part series is that answer.
Challenges Are Not a Sign That God Has Abandoned You
The first and the most important thing to settle is this. A challenge in your life is not evidence that God has withdrawn his presence or his favour from you. 1 Peter 4:12 says do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal as though something strange were happening to you. Peter is addressing people who are genuinely suffering. And his first pastoral response is not to explain why or to promise it will end soon. It is to tell them that what they are experiencing is not strange. It is not an anomaly. It is not a sign that something has gone fundamentally wrong with their relationship with God. Difficulty is part of the terrain of a life lived in a fallen world. And the person who understands that stops spending their energy being bewildered by the existence of the challenge and starts spending it on navigating through it.
John 16:33 in the NLT records Jesus saying I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart because I have overcome the world. He did not say you might face trials. He said you will. Present tense certainty. And in the same breath he said take heart because I have overcome the world. The challenge does not have the final word. The overcomer does. And the overcomer lives in you.
"Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart because I have overcome the world."
John 16:33 NLT
Four Reasons Challenges Come: An Overview
Across this series we will explore four specific and distinct reasons why challenges arrive in the life of a believer. Each one has a different source and therefore requires a different response. Confusing them is one of the main reasons people handle their difficulties less effectively than they could.
First: Some challenges come as formation. God permits them because the specific difficulty is building something in you that cannot be built any other way. This is the James 1 category.
Second: Some challenges come as opposition. Because you are moving in the right direction and the enemy does not want you to arrive. This is the Nehemiah category.
Third: Some challenges come as consequence. They are the natural result of a specific decision or a specific open door that gave something unwelcome access to your life. This is the Samson category.
Fourth: Some challenges come as preparation. God is positioning you for something ahead that the current difficulty is making you ready for. This is the Joseph category.
Knowing which category your current challenge falls into is genuinely important. Because the person who treats a formation challenge as spiritual warfare and spends all their energy rebuking what God sent is missing the point entirely. And the person who treats an enemy's opposition as God's formation and patiently endures what they should be resisting is also missing it entirely. Part 2 begins with the first category and gives you the biblical and practical tools to recognise and navigate it.
Conclusion
Challenges are not a sign that God has left the room. Jesus promised they would come. And he also promised that he has overcome the world they arrive from. Part 2 begins tomorrow with the first category, the challenge that comes as formation, and what it looks like to cooperate with what God is building rather than simply endure what you are experiencing.
