Why Am I Here? Understanding the Purpose God Ordained Before You Were Born
"I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations."

Most people spend the best years of their lives asking one question without quite knowing how to put it into words. Why am I here? Not in the abstract philosophical sense. In the deeply personal and sometimes quietly desperate sense. Why specifically am I here? What was I made for? Why does it sometimes feel as though I am surrounded by people who seem to know what their lives are for while I am still trying to work out what mine is about? These are not weak questions. They are the most honest and the most important questions a human being can ask. And the remarkable thing is that God answered them before you were even born.
What Purpose Actually Means
The word purpose comes from the Latin purposum, meaning to intend, to set forth deliberately, to place ahead in advance. That etymology is more theologically significant than most people realise. Purpose is not something you discover after you have lived enough life to identify your passions. It is something that was set forth deliberately and placed ahead in advance by the one who made you. Before your first breath. Before your first thought. Before your parents knew your name. God had already determined why you exist.
Ephesians 2:10 in the NLT says we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. That phrase long ago in the original Greek is proetoimazo. It means prepared beforehand, made ready in advance. The good things you were created to do were not assembled after your arrival on earth based on the skills you happened to develop. They were prepared beforehand by a God who designed you specifically for them. You did not arrive on earth and then get assigned a purpose. You arrived on earth carrying a purpose that was already ordained before you got here.

Purpose Is Not Seasonal. It Is Ordained.
Here is something that most people have never been told clearly and that changes everything about how you understand your own life. Your purpose is not seasonal. It does not change based on your age, your background, your failures or the opinion of the people around you. Romans 11:29 in the NKJV says the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Irrevocable means it cannot be taken back, cancelled or renegotiated. God does not issue callings on a trial basis. He does not revoke them when you make a mistake. He does not reassign them when the season changes. What he ordained before you were born remains ordained regardless of what has happened since.
This is one of the most liberating truths available to any person who has spent years feeling as though their chance to live a purposeful life has somehow passed them by. It has not. Moses was eighty years old when he first stood before Pharaoh. Abraham received his greatest assignment at seventy-five. The calling was ordained before either of them was born. The circumstances of their lives delayed the outworking of it. But the purpose itself never changed. It simply waited for the person to be ready to step into it.
You Were Known Before You Were Formed
Jeremiah 1:5 is one of the most extraordinary verses in the entire Bible when you really sit with what it is saying. God says to Jeremiah I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set you apart. The word knew in that verse is the Hebrew word yada. It means to know intimately, to perceive completely, to understand fully. God did not simply know about Jeremiah before he was formed. He knew him. Completely. The way you know someone after years of close relationship. And on the basis of that intimate knowing, before a single day of Jeremiah's life had been lived, God set him apart and appointed him to a specific purpose.
The same yada applies to you. God knew you before he formed you. He did not create you and then wonder what to do with you. He knew exactly who you would be and exactly what you were ordained for before the world saw you. Your existence was not an accident. Your placement in this specific generation, this specific family, this specific community and this specific moment in history was not random. It was deliberate. Purposeful. Ordained. And the purpose behind it is still fully intact regardless of what the years since your birth have looked like.
Conclusion
You did not arrive on earth and then get assigned a purpose. You arrived carrying one that was ordained before you got here. Purpose is not seasonal. It is not conditional on your performance. It is not revoked by your failures. It was prepared in advance by a God who knew you completely before the world knew your name.
