Light of The World Today
"So be careful how you live. Do not live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Do not act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do."
Ephesians 5:15-17 NLT
Part 4 named the three things that block people from walking in their ordained purpose. Fear of what people think. The weight of past failure. Waiting for perfect conditions. If you were honest with yourself reading it, you identified which one has been holding you back. Today we move past the identification and into the action. Because purpose is not walked into through understanding alone. It is walked into through specific, practical, daily decisions that begin closing the gap between where you are and where you were ordained to be. And those decisions do not require perfect conditions, a large budget or complete clarity about the destination. They require the willingness to take the next step that is already in front of you.
Step One: Surrender the Outcome and Start with Obedience
The most important practical step in walking toward your ordained purpose is not a business plan or a five-year vision. It is surrender. Proverbs 3:5-6 in the NLT says trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take. The showing of the path is conditional on the seeking of his will. And the seeking of his will is something that happens in prayer, in the Word and in the specific act of placing the outcome in his hands before you begin rather than after you have shaped the plan the way you want it to go.
Abraham is the clearest biblical picture of this. Genesis 12:1 in the NLT records God saying to Abraham leave your native country, your relatives and your father's family and go to the land that I will show you. Notice what God did not tell him. He did not tell Abraham where he was going. He simply told him to go. And Hebrews 11:8 in the NLT says Abraham went, even though he did not know where he was going. The obedience came before the clarity. The step came before the destination was revealed. That is almost always how ordained purpose works. God reveals the next step. Not the whole staircase. And the person who waits for the full picture before they take the first step will wait a very long time at the bottom of a staircase they were always meant to climb.
"It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land. He went without knowing where he was going."
Hebrews 11:8 NLT
Step Two: Begin Where You Are, Not Where You Wish You Were
One of the most practically paralysing ideas in the purpose conversation is the belief that you need to be in a different place before you can begin. A different city. A different job. A different season of life. A different level of qualification or resource. But God almost never starts the journey from where you wish you were. He starts it from where you actually are. With what you actually have. In the relationships you already possess and the community you are already in.
Zechariah 4:10 in the NLT says do not despise these small beginnings for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. Small beginnings are not an embarrassment. They are the standard operating procedure of God. David did not start with Goliath. He started with a lion and a bear in a field when no audience was watching. Luke 16:10 in the NIV says whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. The assignment expands as the faithfulness is demonstrated. But the faithfulness must be demonstrated in the small and the ordinary first. Look at what is already in your hand. The skill you already have. The community you are already part of. The need you can already see from where you are standing right now. Begin there. Today. Not when conditions improve. Today.
"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin."
Zechariah 4:10 NLT
Step Three: Build the Daily Habits That Sustain the Direction
Purpose is not sustained by occasional bursts of inspired activity. It is sustained by the small, consistent, daily disciplines that keep you moving in the right direction even when the inspiration is not particularly strong. Ephesians 5:15-17 in the NLT says be careful how you live. Make the most of every opportunity. Understand what the Lord wants you to do. Three practical implications of that instruction shape the daily habits of the person walking in ordained purpose.
Be intentional with your time. The person walking in ordained purpose does not drift through their days and hope purpose surfaces. They protect the hours that purpose requires and refuse to surrender them to whatever is loudest and most urgent on any given day.
Make the most of every ordinary opportunity. The conversation at work. The relationship in the neighbourhood. The moment in the queue. Purpose does not only operate on the big platform. It operates in the small and the specific and the seemingly inconsequential moment where the person standing in front of you needs exactly what you were ordained to give.
Stay connected to God through daily prayer and the Word so that you understand what he specifically wants you to do in each new season. The person who is close enough to God to hear his direction will never be far from the next step of their ordained purpose.
Conclusion
Abraham went without knowing where he was going and became the father of nations. David was faithful with the lion in the field before he stood before Goliath in the valley. The path to your ordained purpose does not require complete clarity, ideal conditions or a polished plan. It requires surrender, the willingness to begin where you are and the daily habits that keep you moving in the direction God has shown you. Part 6 will close this series with the most important truth of all. How to sustain your ordained purpose across a lifetime and finish well.
