Where Heaven's Help Gathers
Five habits the Bible links with experiencing God's help through his angels.
"If you say, 'The Lord is my refuge,' and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." Psalm 91:9 to 11 NIV
We have seen that angels protect, guide, strengthen and fight. Now a practical question. Does the way I live make a difference to how much of that help I experience? Hebrews 1:14 says angels serve all who inherit salvation, so help is never earned. But when you read Scripture carefully, the promises of angelic help keep appearing alongside five habits. Here they are.
The Five Habits
1. Reverence for God
Psalm 34:7 in the NKJV says the angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. To fear God means to honour him above everything else, including comfort and the opinion of others. In practice: it shows in small choices, such as being honest at work when nobody would find out.
2. Making God your dwelling
Psalm 91:9 uses the picture of a home. The psalm before it, Psalm 90, was written by Moses, who spent years living in tents in the wilderness. He wrote that the Lord has been our dwelling place throughout all generations. God, not a building, was his home. Notice that the promise of angels in verse 11 follows the choice in verse 9 to make him your refuge. In practice: you turn to him first, not last, when trouble arrives.
3. A praying life
In Acts 10:4 the angel told Cornelius, your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. His prayers and his generosity were noticed together. In Daniel 10:12 the angel came because of Daniel's words. Prayer is the channel God most often uses. In practice: set a regular time to pray, and let giving to those in need be part of it.
4. Living by God's word
Psalm 103:20 in the NKJV says angels do His word, heeding the voice of His word. They act on God's word. The more your life is shaped by Scripture, the more you stand in agreement with what they are already doing. In practice: read a passage daily, and then do what it says.
5. Trust
Daniel 6:23 says no wound was found on Daniel, because he had trusted in his God. Trust means relying on God rather than on your own plan. In practice: when a problem arises, pray before you panic and act on what you know he has said.
"Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word."
Psalm 103:20 NKJV
One word of balance. This is not a formula. Job was blameless and still suffered, and Peter still spent a night in prison. These habits describe the life where God's help is most clearly experienced. They are not a way of controlling angels. God commands them, and we look to him.
How to Apply This Today
Find the habit you struggle with most. Read the five habits and ask yourself honestly which one is hardest for you right now. For example, you may rarely pray, hardly open your Bible, or turn to God last rather than first. Pick that one habit and begin with a small step this week, such as praying for five minutes each morning or reading one psalm a day.
Build a simple daily rhythm. In the morning, read one passage and pray. During the day, obey one instruction you know from Scripture. In the evening, give thanks.
Look to God, not to angels. Ask him for help and leave the details with him.
Conclusion
God's help is for all who belong to Christ, and it is most clearly experienced in a life of reverence, prayer, obedience to his word and trust. Part 7 looks at how to ask for that help the right way, and Part 8 closes the series with how to recognise true messengers from false ones.
