Light of the World Today

There is a moment that every serious believer eventually reaches in the journey of purpose. It is the moment when something begins to stir inside them, a persistent sense of calling, a recurring thought, a deep and unexplained pull toward a specific contribution or direction. And instead of the clarity they hoped for, what arrives is a question that is almost always accompanied by a slight trembling of the heart. Is this God? Or is this me?
That question is not the enemy of purpose. It is the doorkeeper of it. Because the person who never asks it is the person who builds their life on the first strong impression that crosses their mind. But the person who asks it honestly and learns how to answer it biblically is the person who builds their life on a foundation they can trust through every storm. This final part of our series on understanding your purpose is dedicated entirely to one critical skill. Learning to recognise, verify and validate the voice of God as he speaks your purpose over your life.
First: Understand How God Speaks Purpose
One of the most liberating truths about how God communicates purpose is that he rarely speaks it in a single dramatic moment and then leaves you to figure out the rest alone. He speaks it progressively, through multiple channels simultaneously, building a body of evidence that a person of faith can test, weigh and build on. The dramatic single encounter, the Damascus road, the burning bush, the angelic visitation, does happen in Scripture. But it is the exception rather than the rule and even in those cases it was followed by a progressive unfolding rather than a complete download of every detail.
The more common pattern of how God speaks purpose is described in Job 33:14-16 where it says God speaks once, yes twice, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men while slumbering on their beds, then he opens the ears of men and seals their instruction. God speaks. Often quietly. Often repeatedly. And the person who has trained themselves to listen in the multiple channels through which he speaks is the person who accumulates sufficient confirmation to move with confidence.

The four primary channels through which God speaks purpose are Scripture, the inner witness of the Holy Spirit, the body of Christ around you and the circumstances he orchestrates. None of these four channels is sufficient alone. But when all four are pointing in the same direction you are standing on the most solid ground available to a believer for making a major life decision about purpose and calling. Understanding each channel and how to read it correctly is the skill this devotion is designed to build.
Channel One: The Word of God
Scripture is the primary and most authoritative channel through which God speaks and it is the non-negotiable standard against which everything else must be measured. If a sense of purpose contradicts the clear teaching of Scripture it is not from God regardless of how strongly it is felt or how many other confirmations seem to support it. Paul said in Galatians 1:8 that even if an angel from heaven preaches a gospel contrary to what he had delivered, let that angel be accursed. The standard of Scripture is that absolute. Nothing overrides it.
But Scripture does more than serve as a negative test. It actively speaks purpose. When Samuel read the scroll of the Law, when Josiah heard the Book of the Law read aloud for the first time and wept and tore his clothes because he understood what it said about his responsibility as king, when Nehemiah read the walls of Jerusalem through the lens of the covenantal promises of God, they were all experiencing the same thing. Scripture was illuminating their specific purpose by bringing their specific situation into contact with the specific promises and commands of God that applied to it. When you read the Bible and a particular passage lights up with unusual intensity, when a verse you have read a dozen times suddenly speaks directly and specifically into the question you are carrying about your purpose, that is the voice of God through Scripture. Note it. Date it. Return to it. It is a thread to follow.

Channel Two: The Inner Witness of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:16 says the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. The Holy Spirit speaks to the human spirit at a level deeper than conscious thought. He bears witness. He testifies. He creates a settled inner knowing that is distinct from both excitement and wishful thinking. Believers throughout the centuries have described this inner witness in similar terms. A deep peace. A settled certainty. A sense of rightness that does not depend on the circumstances being favourable and does not intensify simply because a decision would be convenient.

The inner witness is not the same as enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is loud, energetic and tends to be circumstantially dependent. The inner witness is quiet, consistent and tends to survive the bad days. It is the thing that keeps bringing you back to the same sense of calling even after disappointments and setbacks have stripped away everything that enthusiasm was dependent on. When Paul said in Acts 20:22 that he was going to Jerusalem bound in the spirit, not knowing what would happen to him there, he was describing the inner witness of the Holy Spirit overriding his own preference and comfort. He did not want to go. His friends begged him not to go. But the witness was settled. And he went.
Colossians 3:15 says let the peace of God rule in your hearts. The word rule in the Greek is brabeuo and it means to umpire, to act as an arbitrator. The peace of God is designed to function as the umpire in your heart that calls safe or out on every decision you bring before it. When you bring a sense of purpose before God in prayer and sit quietly with it, what does the umpire call? Settled peace or restless unease? That umpire's call is one of the most reliable indicators of whether what you are sensing is from the Spirit of God or from another source.
Channel Three: The Body of Christ Around You
Proverbs 11:14 says in an abundance of counsellors there is safety. God rarely confirms a major calling in isolation. He builds a community of confirmation around the person he is calling that speaks the same truth from multiple independent directions. This is not about finding people who will tell you what you want to hear. It is about finding spiritually mature people who know you well, who have demonstrated their own faithfulness in their own calling and who can speak to what they genuinely see in you with both love and honesty.
Samuel was told by God that one of Jesse's sons would be Israel's next king but he did not know which one until he was standing in front of each of them. The inner witness of the Spirit told him when David entered the room. Go and anoint him for this is he. The community confirmation came through a prophet who was trusted, who had track record and who was operating in genuine relationship with God. That combination of the inner witness of purpose operating through the confirmation of a trusted community figure is one of the most common patterns of calling confirmation in all of Scripture.

It is also worth noting what community confirmation is not. It is not the unanimous approval of everyone you know. Noah built an ark in the middle of a landscape that had never seen rain. Not a single person outside his family validated the calling and yet it was the most important construction project in human history. Abraham left Ur without a forwarding address in response to a calling that nobody around him understood. Community confirmation is the agreement of the few people specifically positioned by God to speak into your life. Not the popular vote of everyone who knows your name.
Channel Four: Providential Circumstances
God routinely uses circumstances to confirm calling. Not to initiate it, because a calling initiated purely by circumstances is not a calling but an opportunity. But to confirm what has already been spoken through the first three channels. When the right door opens at the right moment with the right provision behind it, when a connection is made that could only be explained by divine arrangement, when a resource appears precisely at the point of obedience, these are the fingerprints of God confirming what he has already spoken.
Nehemiah's purpose had been spoken in his heart for four months before the circumstances confirmed it. Then on a specific day, standing before the king he served, the king asked him what he wanted and the hand of my God was good upon me, says Nehemiah, and I told him. The circumstance did not create the purpose. The purpose had been carried and prayed over for four months. But the circumstance confirmed it and opened the door to the resources the purpose required. That sequence, purpose carried in prayer first and then confirmed by circumstance, is the pattern that distinguishes genuine calling confirmation from opportunism.
A Verified Real World Example: Eric Liddell
In 1924 a young Scottish Christian athlete named Eric Liddell arrived at the Paris Olympics as Britain's favourite for the 100 metres gold medal. When he discovered that the 100 metres heats were scheduled for a Sunday, he withdrew from the event on grounds of conscience. He would not compete on the Sabbath. The British Olympic Committee applied enormous pressure. Senior government figures pleaded with him to reconsider. He was accused of letting his country down. He refused to change his position. Instead he trained for the 400 metres, an event he had barely prepared for, and won gold. His time set a world record. His story, documented in multiple verified biographies and recorded in the historical archives of the British Olympic Association, became one of the most celebrated testimonies of purpose and conviction in modern athletic history.
But what most people do not know is what Liddell did after the Olympics. He returned to China as a missionary, which had been his calling before the athletics and which he returned to without hesitation after the fame. He died in 1945 in a Japanese internment camp in China having refused an opportunity to be repatriated in an exchange of civilian prisoners. He gave his place to a pregnant woman. The last testimony of those who were with him in the camp was that he spent his final days running Sunday school classes and encouraging fellow prisoners with the same quiet, settled, unwavering conviction that had characterised every decision of his life from the 100 metres withdrawal to his final breath. He knew why he was on the earth. Not primarily to run. To know God and make him known. The athletics was the vehicle. The purpose was always something far deeper. And he never confused the two.

Eric Liddell's life illustrates all four channels of purpose confirmation operating together. The Word of God governed his decisions, the inner witness of the Spirit produced the settled peace that held him under enormous pressure, the community of faith around him confirmed his calling as a missionary, and the circumstances of the Olympics and what came after it confirmed and amplified what God had already spoken. He did not need the gold medal to know his purpose. But the gold medal became part of the story God used to demonstrate it to the world.
How to Silence the Voices That Are Not God's
Learning to hear God speak your purpose requires learning to recognise and silence the voices that compete with his. There are three consistent competitors. The first is fear. Fear speaks in the voice of your worst assessment of yourself. It sounds like you are not qualified, you will fail, nobody will take you seriously, it is too late and you have missed your moment. Fear is not the voice of God. Romans 8:15 says you have not received the spirit of fear but of adoption whereby you cry Abba Father. When the voice you are hearing produces paralysis, shame and a shrinking back from what you sense God is saying, that voice is not from him.
"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

The second competitor is the opinion of people who were not part of your original calling conversation with God. Other people's expectations, family pressure, cultural norms and the measuring sticks of comparison all speak loudly in the direction of what is safe, respectable and conventional. They are not inherently wrong. But they are not authoritative on the question of what God specifically made you for. Abraham left everything familiar on the word of God without a forwarding address. Moses went back to Egypt on the word of God over the objections of his own sense of inadequacy. Jesus began his public ministry not when the people expected the Messiah to arrive but when the Father declared this is my beloved Son at the Jordan. God's timing and God's calling are not subject to a democratic vote among the people around you.
The third competitor is the voice of counterfeit purpose. This is the most subtle and the most dangerous. It sounds like God's voice in that it uses spiritual language, produces initial excitement and arrives with what appears to be a calling. But it does not pass the four channel test. It does not align consistently with Scripture. It does not produce settled peace under pressure. It does not gain confirmation from the spiritually mature people around you. And it tends to be primarily self-serving in its focus rather than outwardly directed in its purpose. The test of four channels applied consistently over time will reveal the counterfeit because a counterfeit cannot pass all four channels simultaneously. It will fail at least one of them.
A Practical Verification Framework: The Four Questions
Here is a practical framework you can apply to any sense of purpose or calling you are currently carrying. Bring it before these four questions honestly and record your answers.
Question 1: Is it consistent with Scripture?
Not just not contradicted by it but actively supported by the character of God, the values of the kingdom and the precedents of what God has called people to in similar situations. Study the passages that relate to what you sense your purpose is. Let the Word either confirm or challenge what you are holding. If after extended engagement with Scripture the sense of calling remains and is supported rather than undermined, that is a significant confirmation.
Question 2: Does it produce settled peace or restless anxiety?
Bring the calling before God in extended, quiet, unhurried prayer. Not in the first five minutes. After twenty or thirty minutes of genuine stillness before him. What does the umpire call? The authentic voice of God on your purpose will produce a peace that is recognisably different from the peace produced by convincing yourself of something you want to be true. The former is settled and deepens the longer you sit with it. The latter requires constant internal maintenance and becomes anxious under pressure.
Question 3: What do the spiritually mature people closest to me say?
Not the people most likely to agree with you. The people most likely to tell you the truth even when the truth is inconvenient. Share what you sense your purpose is with two or three spiritually mature people who know you well and ask them to pray about it and speak honestly into it. Their combined response, neither unanimous rejection nor uncritical enthusiasm, but honest, prayed-over, Scripture-grounded observation, is one of the most reliable sources of calling confirmation available to you.
Question 4: Has God been confirming this through circumstances?
Look back over the past six to twelve months. Have there been doors opening, connections made, resources appearing or situations arising that are consistent with the direction of the calling you sense? Circumstantial confirmation alone is never sufficient. But when the other three channels are pointing in the same direction and the circumstances are consistently aligned with rather than contradicting what you sense, you are standing on ground that is solid enough to build on.
So the Light of the World word for today and for this entire series is this. God is speaking. He has been speaking. He spoke your purpose over you before you were born and he has been speaking it through Scripture, through the witness of his Spirit, through the people he placed around you and through the circumstances he has orchestrated in your life ever since. The question was never whether he was speaking. The question was always whether you were listening. Listen today. Listen with all four channels open. And when the voice you hear passes the test, walk in it. Without hesitation. Without waiting for a larger platform or a more convenient season. Walk in it now. Because the world cannot afford to wait any longer for the person God specifically made to do what only you can do.
