GODINTHEMIDDLE

Exodus 14:19 — “Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them.”

Most people talk about the God who opens the Red Sea.
Others talk about the God who closes it on Pharaoh.
But very few talk about the God who stands in the middle.

In Exodus 14, Israel is trapped between a sea they cannot cross and an army they cannot fight.
They are not in Egypt anymore…
but they are not in the Promised Land either.

They are in the middle.

And it is in that middle place the place of uncertainty, pressure, and fear and that God does something unusual:

He moves from the front to the back.

The same God who was leading them…
now stands behind them.

Why
Because the middle is where you need protection more than direction.

The middle is where:

• You know too much to go back
• You see too little to move forward
• You feel too weak to stand still
• And too overwhelmed to decide

The middle is where faith is tested, identity is challenged, and trust becomes real.

And here is the revelation most people miss:

God does some of His greatest work in the middle seasons of your life.

Not at the beginning.
Not at the end.
But in the middle, the place where you feel stuck, suspended, or unsure.

ORIGINAL INSIGHT: GOD MOVES DIFFERENTLY IN THE MIDDLE

In the middle, God doesn’t always speak loudly.
He doesn’t always give new instructions.
He doesn’t always show you the whole plan.

Instead, He positions Himself behind you not to push you, but to protect you.

In the middle:

• God blocks what is chasing you
• God shields you from what you can’t see
• God slows down what is trying to overtake you
• God stands between you and the thing that wants to break you

The middle is not a mistake.
It is a managed moment.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF “THE MIDDLE”

Daniel was in the middle of the lions before he saw deliverance.
Ruth was in the middle of grief before she stepped into destiny.
David was in the middle of hiding before he became king.
The disciples were in the middle of the storm before Jesus calmed it.

The middle is where God shapes you for what’s next.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR LIFE TODAY

If you feel like you are in between:

• Between jobs
• Between clarity and confusion
• Between healing and hurt
• Between who you were and who you are becoming
• Between a closed door and an unopened one

You are not abandoned.
You are protected.

God has not left you.
He has repositioned Himself.

He is standing behind you, blocking what you don’t even know is coming.

HOW TO APPLY THIS IN DAILY LIFE

  1. Stop assuming silence means absence.
In the middle, God is working behind the scenes.

  2. Stop trying to outrun the process.
The middle is where God strengthens your faith muscles.

  3. Stop fearing what’s behind you.
If God moved to the back, nothing behind you can touch you.

  4. Start trusting the pace of God.
If He hasn’t opened the sea yet, it’s because the timing isn’t right.

  5. Start looking for God’s positioning, not just His voice.
Sometimes His movement is the message.

ACTION PLAN FOR TODAY

1. Identify your “middle.”
What area of your life feels stuck or suspended

2. Write down what you fear might “catch up” to you.
Name it, fear loses power when exposed.

3. Declare Exodus 14:19 over that situation.
Say: “God is behind me, protecting me.”

4. Take one small step forward.
The sea didn’t part until Moses lifted his staff.

5. End the day with gratitude.
Thank God for what He is blocking that you cannot see.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for being the God who stands in the middle with me.
When I feel stuck, unsure, or overwhelmed, remind me that You have not left. You have simply re-positioned Yourself to protect me.
Give me the courage to trust Your timing, the wisdom to recognize Your movement, and the faith to keep walking even when I cannot see the way forward.
Cover my past, guard my present, and guide my future.
In Jesus name, Amen.

— Amen

Reflection

  • 11. What part of my life feels like a “middle place” right now - a space where I’m no longer where I was, but not yet where I hoped to be? This helps identify the exact area where God may be repositioning Himself behind you.
  • 2 What fears, pressures, or past experiences do I feel are “chasing me,” and how might God be blocking them without me realising it?
  • 3How have I interpreted God’s silence as absence, or as a different kind of presence? This shifts your perspective from “God isn’t speaking” to “God is standing behind me.”
  • 4What small step of faith can I take today, even if the sea in front of me hasn’t opened yet? This turns revelation into action, just like Moses lifting his staff before the waters parted.
