The God Who Lifts Your Head

"But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high." Psalm 3:3 NIV

David wrote this psalm while running from his own son. Absalom had taken the throne by force, and David left Jerusalem in tears. Second Samuel 15:30 says he went up the Mount of Olives weeping, with his head covered and his feet bare. Psalm 3:1 and 2 gives the pressure: many rise against him, and many are saying that God will not deliver him. Then verse 3 begins with one small word. But.

Three Things David Says About God

A shield around me. Both the NIV and the NLT say around. Not only in front. Betrayal rarely comes from the front. It comes from behind and from people close to you. God covers every side.

My glory. Everyone was writing David's story as finished. But he calls God his glory, his honour. Your name and your reputation are safer in God's hands than in your own defence.

The One who lifts my head. David's head was covered in shame as he wrote this. Shame makes us bow low. God does not pretend the pain is not there. He restores dignity. The NKJV says he is the One who lifts up my head.

"I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me."

Psalm 3:5 NIV

Here is the proof that his head had been lifted. In the middle of the crisis, with enemies all around, David slept.

How to Apply This Today

1. Answer your worries with "But you, Lord."

Look at how David prays. Verses 1 and 2 list the problem. Verse 3 answers it, beginning with "But you, Lord" and then saying who God is. You can pray the same way. When a worry or a harsh thought repeats in your mind, say it honestly, then add "But you, Lord" and finish the sentence with something true about God.

"Everyone seems to be against me. But you, Lord, are a shield around me." "I feel ashamed. But you, Lord, lift my head." "I am afraid for tomorrow. But you, Lord, sustain me."

Try writing the problem on the left of a page and your "But you, Lord" answer on the right. It trains your mind to end every worry with God rather than with the problem.

2. Stop fighting to protect your name.

When someone spreads a rumour or misjudges you, the natural urge is to argue with everyone, explain yourself repeatedly or hit back. Instead, if you need to, state the truth once, calmly. Then pray and leave the rest with God. First Peter 2:23 in the NIV says that when they hurled their insults at Jesus, he did not retaliate. Instead he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. That is what it means to let God be your glory.

3. Lie down in peace tonight.

Before bed, tell God everything that is troubling you and hand it over. Then read Psalm 3:5 aloud and go to sleep. If your mind keeps racing, do not fight it. Quietly repeat the verse. Psalm 4:8 in the NIV says in peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Sleeping is a way of saying that you trust the shield is still there.

Conclusion

The shield is around you. Your glory is in his hands. And the head that shame bowed low is the very one he lifts. Whatever the problem is today, end it with the words but you, Lord.

Memory Verse

A Prayer for Today

Scripture to pray with: Psalm 3:5 NIV

Lord, I have many worries, but you are my shield, my glory and the One who lifts my head. I give you my reputation and my shame. Lift my head today. Tonight I will lie down and sleep, and I will wake again, because you sustain me. In Jesus name, Amen.

— Amen
