Light of The World Today
"Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" Hebrews 1:14 NIV
Some believers ignore angels completely. Others become so fascinated by them that they lose sight of God. The Bible takes a steadier path. It tells us who angels are, what they do and where they stop. Hebrews 1:14 gives the clearest one sentence summary in all of Scripture, and it is a good place to begin.
They Are Created Servants, Not Rivals
Psalm 148:2 and 5 calls on all his angels to praise the Lord, for at his command they were created. Colossians 1:16 says that everything was created by him and for him, including things visible and invisible. Angels are created beings. They are powerful, but they are not equal to God, and they are never to be worshipped. In Revelation 22:8 and 9 John fell at an angel's feet, and the angel stopped him at once. Do not do that, he said. I am a fellow servant. Worship God.
They Are Sent on Your Behalf
Two words in Hebrews 1:14 matter most. Ministering means serving. Sent means they act under orders. The Amplified Bible says they are ministering spirits sent out in the service of God for the assistance of those who are to inherit salvation. The NLT says they are spirits sent to care for those who will inherit salvation. In other words, if you belong to Christ, you are the kind of person angels are sent to serve.
"Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word."
Psalm 103:20 NIV
Notice who gives the orders. Angels obey God's word. They do not take instructions from us. We pray to God, and he commands them as he sees fit.
You Are Never as Alone as You Feel
In 2 Kings 6:15 to 17 Elisha's servant woke to find an enemy army surrounding the city. He panicked. Elisha said, do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. Then he prayed, and the Lord opened the servant's eyes. The hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. The help had been there all along. He simply could not see it.
How to Apply This Today
Thank God for them, but never worship them. Tell God you are grateful for the help you cannot see, and direct all your praise to him.
Stay close to God's word. Angels obey his word, so the safest place to be is where his word is being obeyed, including in your own life.
Replace fear with the Elisha question. When you feel outnumbered, ask what Elisha asked. Lord, open my eyes to see that those with us are more than those against us.
Conclusion
Angels are created servants, sent by God to serve those who belong to Christ. They obey his word, and they are never to be worshipped. You are not as alone as you feel. Part 2 looks at how angels protect, with some remarkable examples from Scripture.
