Peace in the Boat: The Word That Came Before the Storm
"That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, 'Let us go over to the other side.'" Mark 4:35 NIV
You now know how to tell what kind of challenge you are facing. The next question is a very human one. How do you stay calm while it is still going on? The storm in Mark 4 is usually taught as a story about fear. Look again at one sentence that is easy to miss. Before the first wave rose, Jesus had already said where they were going.
The Word Came Before the Storm
Jesus did not say, " Let us go and see what happens. He said, let us go over to the other side. The destination was named. Then the storm arrived in the middle of the journey. It was not a sign that they had misheard or disobeyed. They were on the water precisely because they had obeyed.
Mark 4:36 adds a small detail in the NIV. There were also other boats with him. Other people were caught in the same storm simply because they were near Jesus. If you are in a hard season, the first question is not why this is happening to me. It is what did he say before it started.
He Was in the Boat, and He Was Asleep
Mark 4:38 says Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. He was not absent, and he was not careless. He was resting on what had already been said. The disciples woke him with a question that tells us what the real storm was. Teacher, do you not care if we drown? The wind was loud, but the louder noise was the doubt that he cared.
"Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace, be still!' And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."
Mark 4:39 NKJV
Notice the order. He stilled the sea first, then turned and asked them, ' Why are you so afraid? He dealt with the storm outside and the storm inside. Both mattered to him.
How to Apply This Today
Return to the word you were given. Write down what God has said about your situation, whether a promise, a calling, or an instruction. Read it aloud when the waves rise.
Do not read the storm as a reversal. Ask honestly whether it began after you obeyed. If it did, it may be confirmation rather than correction.
Bring the doubt to him, then remember he is in the boat. Isaiah 43:2 in the NLT says When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.
Conclusion
A storm in the middle of obedience does not cancel the destination. Jesus named the other side before the first wave, and he was in the boat the whole time. Part 2 will look at the practical habits that keep your heart at peace while the storm is still raging.
Memory Verse
"When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown."
