Light of The World Today
"They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him." Mark 5:1 and 2 NIV
Most people stop reading at the calm. The wind drops, the disciples marvel, and the story seems finished. But Mark does not stop there. The very next verse tells us where the boat was going. Jesus said, let us go over to the other side, and the other side had a name. There was a man there, living among the tombs, who had been waiting a long time for someone to come.
The Storm Was Standing Between Jesus and One Man
Think about what that means. The wind and the waves were not random. They stood between Jesus and a man who needed freedom. The crossing was not only about the disciples reaching a destination. It was about a person being reached. Mark 5:15 says that when people came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed sitting there, dressed and in his right mind.
If you are in a hard season, you may be tempted to see it only as an obstacle to your own plans. But there may be someone on the other side of your storm who is waiting for you to arrive. Someone who needs your testimony, your presence or your faithfulness. The enemy often opposes the crossing precisely because of who is on the other side.
The Storm Changed What They Knew About Jesus
Mark 4:41 in the NIV says the disciples were terrified and asked each other, who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him. They had called him Teacher at the start of the crossing. By the end they were asking who he really was. The storm gave them a knowledge of him that calm water never could. That is one of the quiet gifts of a hard season. You come out knowing him in a way you could not have known him before.
"He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." Psalm 107:29 and 30 NIV
How to Apply This When You Arrive
Ask who is on your other side: Is there a person, a family or a community that your crossing is meant to reach? Let that question lift your eyes from the waves.
Write down what you learned about Jesus in the storm: Not what you learned about yourself. What did you discover about him that you did not know before? Keep it somewhere you can read it again.
Tell someone what he did: After his deliverance the man was told in Mark 5:19 to go home to his own people and tell them how much the Lord had done for him. 2 Corinthians 1:4 in the NLT says he comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
Conclusion
Across three parts the picture is complete. Jesus names the destination before the storm. He is in the boat throughout. Habits built in calm weather hold you steady. And on the other side someone is waiting. Keep going. The crossing is for more than you.
