he Danger of Spiritual Drowsiness
One of the greatest threats to readiness is not open rebellion. It is quiet drowsiness. It is the slow drift that happens when we stop living with eternity in view. We do not reject God. We simply relax. We settle. We become comfortable.
Spiritual sleep feels normal. It feels familiar. It feels like routine. But routine without expectancy becomes a trap. Jesus warned His disciples again and again to stay awake, because the enemy does not need to destroy your faith to make you unready. He only needs to dull it. He only needs to convince you that you have time.
This is why Jesus spoke so often about watchfulness. He knew that the greatest danger to the church would not be persecution. It would be distraction.
**Biblical Example One
The Days of Noah**
Jesus compared His return to the days of Noah. People were eating, drinking, marrying, building, planning, and living their ordinary lives. Nothing seemed unusual. Nothing felt urgent. Nothing appeared dangerous.
But the danger was not in what they were doing.
The danger was in what they were ignoring.
Noah preached for years. The warning was clear. The ark was visible. The message was public. But the world had grown too comfortable to take it seriously.
Then the rain began.
The door that had been open for so long suddenly closed. The moment of preparation was over. The opportunity to respond had passed.
Jesus said His return will be the same. Life will feel normal. People will be busy. The world will be distracted. And the moment will arrive suddenly.
Not to frighten us.
But to remind us that delay is not promised.
**Biblical Example Two
The Ten Virgins**
In Matthew chapter twenty five, Jesus tells the story of ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom. All ten had lamps. All ten expected Him. All ten believed He was coming.
But only five were ready.
The other five assumed they had time. They assumed they could prepare later. They assumed the bridegroom would not come at that moment.
When the cry rang out, the ready ones entered the wedding feast. The unprepared ones arrived too late. The door was shut.
They believed in the bridegroom.
They wanted to be with Him.
They simply were not ready when He arrived.
Belief is not the same as readiness.
Desire is not the same as preparation.
Jesus told this story to wake us up.
**A Real World Example
The Missed Flight**
Imagine someone who has a flight at six in the morning. They set their alarm. They pack their bags. They know the importance of the trip. But when the alarm rings, they hit snooze. Then they hit it again. And again.
They do not reject the flight.
They simply delay getting up.
By the time they finally rise, the plane is gone. Not because they did not believe in the flight, but because they did not act with urgency.
This is how many believers treat the return of Christ.
We believe it.
We agree with it.
We intend to be ready.
But we keep hitting spiritual snooze.
Jesus is calling us to wake up before the moment arrives.
The Call to Live Awake
To live awake is not to live anxious. It is to live aware. It is to live with your eyes lifted, your heart steady, and your priorities aligned with heaven.
Living awake means you do not waste your days.
You do not postpone obedience.
You do not treat forgiveness as optional.
You do not treat holiness as a suggestion.
You do not treat time as something you own.
Living awake means you live as though Jesus could return at any moment, because He can.
It means you live with a heart that is ready to meet Him, not someday, but today.
What Readiness Looks Like
Readiness is not perfection.
Readiness is direction.
It is the posture of a heart that is leaning toward God, not away from Him. It is the life of someone who is actively walking with Jesus, not drifting from Him.
Readiness looks like repentance that is not delayed.
Readiness looks like love that is not withheld.
Readiness looks like obedience that is not postponed.
Readiness looks like faith that is not casual.
Readiness looks like hope that is not embarrassed.
Readiness is not about predicting the day.
It is about preparing your life.
