Light of the World Today
There is a significant difference between knowing about God and actually knowing him. One fills your head with correct information. The other fills your life with his presence. And on the day that matters most, only one of them will be enough.

Jesus made one of the most extraordinary and the most clarifying statements in all of his recorded teaching in John 17:3. He did not say eternal life is achieved through religious performance. He did not say it is earned through moral excellence, theological correctness or church attendance. He said this is the way to have eternal life, to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ the one you sent. Eternal life is defined not as a destination you reach after you die but as a quality of relationship you enter now with the God who made you and the Son he sent to rescue you. Knowing God is not preparation for eternal life. Knowing God is eternal life. And that single reframe changes the entire purpose of the Christian journey.
What It Actually Means to Know God
The Greek word for know in John 17:3 is ginosko, which does not primarily mean intellectual knowledge. It means experiential, relational, intimate knowledge gained through personal encounter and sustained connection over time. It is the same word used in Matthew 1:25 for the intimate relationship between husband and wife. It describes a knowing that cannot be acquired from a book alone or from attending a service where someone else talks about their experience of God. It is the firsthand, personally encountered, continuously developing knowledge of a person who has become genuinely familiar to you because you have spent real time in their presence.
The Amplified Bible expands Philippians 3:10 with stunning precision. Paul says my determined purpose is that I may know him and that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with him. Progressively. More deeply. More intimately. The person who has known God for twenty years and the person who has just come to faith are at different points on the same ongoing journey of progressive acquaintance with the same God. Knowing God is never finished in this life. It is a direction, not a destination. And the person who is genuinely moving in that direction, who is progressively becoming more deeply and intimately acquainted with him, is the person for whom the entire Christian life makes the most sense and produces the most fruit.

The Warning Jesus Gave That Most People Never Take Seriously
Matthew 7:21-23 is one of the most sobering passages in the entire New Testament. Jesus says not everyone who calls out to me Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgement day many will say to me Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name. But I will reply I never knew you. Get away from me you who break God's laws.
The people Jesus describes in that passage are not atheists or casual sceptics. They are people who used his name. Who did ministry in his name. Who produced what appeared to be miraculous results in his name. And his response to them is not well done but a little more discipleship is needed. His response is I never knew you. The word knew there is again ginosko. The same word as John 17:3. They had performance in his name. They did not have relationship with his person. And he says get away from me. That is the most urgent pastoral warning in Scripture about the danger of substituting religious activity for genuine personal knowledge of God. You can be busy in the name of someone you have never actually met. And on the day that matters most, busyness in the name is no substitute for relationship with the person.

Why Jesus Christ Is the Only Way to Know God
The question most people in a pluralistic world ask is why Jesus specifically. Why is the relationship with God not accessible through any sincere spiritual path? The answer is not a matter of Christian exclusivism as an attitude. It is a matter of the specific problem that stood between humanity and God and the specific solution that was required to address it. Romans 3:23 in the NIV says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The distance between a holy God and a sinful humanity is not a cultural gap that education or goodwill can bridge. It is a moral and legal separation that requires a specific solution. Someone of infinite worth had to pay the debt that sin created. And no human being, no matter how morally excellent, has the infinite worth required to pay an infinite debt.
This is precisely why Jesus. As the Son of God, he carries infinite worth. As a human being who took on flesh in the incarnation, he represents humanity before God. Only someone who is both fully God and fully human could stand in the gap between an infinitely holy God and a sinful humanity and pay a debt that was simultaneously infinite in its requirement and human in its origin. 1 Timothy 2:5 in the NIV says there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. One mediator. Not because God is exclusive in an arbitrary sense. Because the problem required a specific solution and only one person in the entire history of creation had both the nature and the position to provide it.

Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. He is not a way among many options. He is the way. The bridge. The mediator. The one who took the sin of every human being onto himself on the cross so that the legal barrier between humanity and God was removed completely and permanently for everyone who receives what he did. 2 Corinthians 5:21 in the NLT says God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. Made right. Not improved. Not gradually acceptable. Made right. The moment a person receives Jesus Christ and what he did at Calvary, the legal standing that separated them from God is removed. And the relationship that God designed them for from before the foundation of the world becomes not just available but actual.
How to Know God More Deeply Starting Today
Jeremiah 29:13 in the NIV says you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. The seeking is the prerequisite. And the finding is the promise. God is not hiding from you. He is not making the relationship deliberately obscure or difficult. He is waiting to be sought by the whole heart rather than by the fraction of a person's attention that is not already claimed by everything else competing for it. The person who genuinely seeks God with all their heart will find him. That is not a possibility. It is a promise from the God who made the heart that is doing the seeking.
In practice this means three specific daily commitments. Reading the Word with the specific intention of meeting the person behind it rather than simply completing a reading plan. Praying in a way that is genuinely conversational rather than performative, bringing what is actually in your heart to a God who already knows it and welcoming his response into the quiet. And choosing to respond in obedience to what you know he is asking of you, because John 14:21 in the NIV says whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me, and the one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. The deepening of the knowledge of God is consistently connected in Scripture to obedience to what is already known. The person who knows God well is almost always the person who has been faithful to act on what they already know of him.
So the Light of the World word for today is this. Eternal life is not a destination you arrive at after you die. It is a relationship you enter now with the God who made you and the Son who rescued you. Do not settle for knowing about him. Seek him with all your heart. Read the Word to meet the person behind it. Pray to the one who is already present and waiting. Obey what you already know. And watch as the most important relationship available to any human being becomes progressively more real, more deep and more transforming in the specific life that only you are living.
