SOUL WINNING 2

Light of the World Today

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 1:8 NIV

Here is something most people miss about Acts 1:8. Jesus did not say go and be my witnesses and I will send power to help you. He said you will receive power and then you will be my witnesses. The power comes before the witnessing. Not as a reward for the effort but as the equipment for the task. Soul winning was never designed to be carried out in human strength alone. The most effective evangelists in history have always understood one thing clearly. They are not the ones doing the convincing. The Holy Spirit is. Their role is to show up, open their mouth and trust the one who promised to fill it.

What the Holy Spirit Actually Does in Evangelism

John 16:8 in the NLT says when he comes he will convict the world of its sin and of God's righteousness and of the coming judgment. The Holy Spirit does the convicting. You do not have to. In fact when you try to do the convicting yourself, conversations become arguments and the other person becomes defensive. But when you simply speak the truth of the gospel clearly and with love, the Holy Spirit takes those words and does something with them in the interior of the person listening that no amount of clever argument or emotional pressure could ever produce. He reaches the parts that your words alone cannot get to.

This is the single most practically liberating truth in the whole of soul winning. You are not responsible for the response. You are responsible for the faithfulness of the witness. The moment you understand that, the anxiety that makes most people avoid evangelism significantly reduces. You are not trying to win a debate. You are not trying to manufacture a feeling in someone else. You are sowing a seed and trusting the Holy Spirit to water it, germinate it and in his time bring it to harvest.

"When he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment."

John 16:8 NLT

How to Pray in the Spirit Before You Witness

Before every significant witnessing conversation, pray. Not a long formal prayer. A simple and honest one. Ask the Holy Spirit to go ahead of you into the conversation. Ask him to prepare the person's heart. Ask him to give you the specific words that will land in the specific place this specific person most needs them to land. Ephesians 6:19 in the NLT records Paul asking the church in Ephesus to pray that I will be given the right words as I boldly explain God's mysterious plan. Paul, who had encountered Jesus personally on the Damascus road and had been preaching for decades, still asked for prayer before he spoke. If Paul needed that, so do you.

Luke 12:12 in the NIV says the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say. At that time. Not three days before in your preparation. At that time. In the moment. This is one of the most practically reassuring promises available to any believer who feels they are not eloquent enough or knowledgeable enough to witness effectively. You do not need to have every answer ready in advance. You need to be willing to open your mouth and trust that the Holy Spirit will fill it with what is needed for that specific person in that specific moment.

The Difference Prayer Makes: A Biblical Example

Acts 4 records Peter and John being arrested for healing a man at the temple gate and preaching the resurrection of Jesus. They were hauled before the Sanhedrin, the most intimidating religious court available to them. And Acts 4:8 in the NIV says then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them. Filled with the Holy Spirit. In the most pressured moment of his public witness, Peter did not rely on his fishing vocabulary or his three years of listening to Jesus. He was filled and then he spoke. And Acts 4:13 in the NIV says when they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

Unschooled. Ordinary. Astonishing. The gap between who Peter was naturally and what came out of him in that courtroom was entirely the Holy Spirit. And the Sanhedrin noticed not his theology but his time with Jesus. The most compelling evidence of the Holy Spirit in your witnessing is not the eloquence of your words. It is the unmistakeable quality of a life that has genuinely been with Jesus. That is what people take note of. That is what they cannot argue with.

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit convicts. You witness. That division of responsibility is the most liberating truth in soul winning. Be filled before you speak. Pray before every conversation. Trust the one who promised to give you the words at that time. And let the quality of your time with Jesus be the most compelling evidence of the gospel that any person around you ever encounters. Part 6 closes the series with a practical personal evangelism action plan that you can begin using this week.

A Prayer for Today

Holy Spirit, go ahead of me into every conversation I have today. Prepare the hearts of the people I will speak with before I arrive. Give me the right words at the right time, not from my preparation but from your filling. And remind me that the convincing is yours, not mine. All you need from me is a willing mouth and a life that has clearly been with Jesus. That I can offer you today. In Jesus name, Amen.

— Amen

Reflection

  • 1Before your last witnessing conversation, did you pray specifically and ask the Holy Spirit to go ahead of you into it? If you are honest, most witnessing happens in our own strength and wisdom. What would it look like this week to make that prayer the non-negotiable first step before every conversation about Jesus, however small or ordinary it feels? "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses." Acts 1:8 NIV
