Light of the World
"Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel." 1 Corinthians 9:16 NIV
Nobody warns you about the rejections. The colleague who laughs. The family member who shuts the conversation down firmly. The friend who says they respect your faith but that it is simply not for them and changes the subject permanently. The stranger on the street who walks away mid-sentence. These are real. And if you are not prepared for them they will do one of two things. They will make you withdraw from witnessing entirely, protecting yourself from the discomfort of rejection. Or they will harden you into a aggressive, agenda-driven evangelist who makes people feel cornered rather than loved. Neither is the answer. The answer is understanding what fuelled the people who kept going regardless. And learning to be fuelled by the same source.
The Fuel That Sustained Paul Through Every Rejection
1 Corinthians 9:16 in the NIV records Paul saying woe to me if I do not preach the gospel. That is not the language of someone doing evangelism out of obligation. It is the language of someone who has experienced the love of God so personally and so completely that keeping it to themselves feels genuinely impossible. Paul was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked and stoned. And he kept going. Not because he was extraordinarily courageous by temperament. But because the love of Christ had become the most compelling force in his life and sharing it was not a programme he was enrolled in. It was the overflow of everything he had received.
2 Corinthians 5:14 in the AMP says the love of Christ controls and urges and compels us. The word compels in the original Greek is sunecho, meaning to hold together, to press from every side, to leave no other option. The love of Christ, genuinely received and genuinely understood, becomes the specific force that makes soul winning not a duty you perform but an expression of who you are. When you are genuinely overwhelmed by what Jesus did for you personally, telling people about him stops feeling awkward. It starts feeling like the most natural thing in the world.
"The love of Christ controls and urges and compels us."
2 Corinthians 5:14 AMP
How to Handle Rejection Without Losing Heart
Jesus himself was rejected. Isaiah 53:3 in the NLT says he was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows acquainted with deepest grief. If the Son of God was rejected in his witnessing, you will be too. And the question is not whether it will happen but what you will do when it does. Luke 10:16 in the NLT records Jesus telling his disciples that anyone who rejects you rejects me and anyone who rejects me rejects the one who sent me. The rejection is not personal to you. It is a response to the message. And the person who understands that does not carry the weight of another person's rejection as though it is a verdict on their worth. They shake it off, as Jesus told the disciples in Luke 10:11, and they move to the next conversation.
Reinhard Bonnke was rejected and opposed repeatedly in the early years of his ministry. When he first began holding crusades in Africa the crowds were small and the results were modest. He continued. When he encountered hostility from religious and political authorities he continued. When his tent was destroyed by a riot in Kano, Nigeria in 1991, he continued. He said publicly that he never lost the conviction that Africa shall be saved and that no amount of opposition could extinguish a fire that God himself had lit. The fire was not maintained by willpower. It was maintained by returning daily to the source of the love that made the message worth proclaiming regardless of the response.
Practical Ways to Keep Your Evangelistic Fire Alive
Pray specifically for the people you are witnessing to by name
Romans 10:1 in the NIV says brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. Paul prayed for specific people by community. When you begin praying specifically for the people in your life who do not yet know Jesus, your heart toward them changes. You stop seeing them as difficult people to avoid and start seeing them as people Jesus loves and died for. Prayer does not only change situations. It changes the person who is praying. Name them. Pray for them daily. Watch what happens to your compassion for them over the following weeks.
Surround yourself with people who are also witnessing
Acts 4:31 in the NIV says after they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. The early church did not evangelise as lone individuals. They prayed together, were filled together and spoke boldly together. Find one or two people who share the passion for reaching the lost. Pray together. Share stories of what God is doing. Celebrate every conversation that opened, not just the ones that ended in a decision. Community multiplies courage in witnessing the same way it multiplies courage in everything else.
Return regularly to your own story
The person who stays close to the memory of what life was like before Jesus and what the encounter with him produced is the person who finds that the motivation to share it never fully runs dry. Read your own testimony back to yourself occasionally. Remind yourself what was at stake. What was lost. What was found. The gratitude that produces effective witnessing is not manufactured by trying to feel more grateful. It grows naturally from a person who stays in regular contact with the specific reality of what they were rescued from and by whom.
Conclusion
The fire for soul winning is not sustained by enthusiasm alone. It is sustained by the love of Christ pressing from every side, by daily prayer for specific people and by staying close to your own story of what you were rescued from and by whom. Rejection is real. Keep going anyway. Part 5 will address the role of the Holy Spirit in evangelism and why the most effective soul winners never operate in their own strength alone.
