Win Souls

Light of The World Today

"Follow me and I will make you fishers of men."

Matthew 4:19 NKJV

Most people think soul winning is a gift reserved for preachers, evangelists and the particularly bold. It is not. It is a calling extended to every single person who has received Jesus Christ. Acts 1:8 in the NIV says you will be my witnesses. Not you might be. Not the gifted ones among you will be. You will be. All of you. The moment you received Jesus you became a witness to what he did in your life. The only question is whether you are sharing what you witnessed or keeping it to yourself. Today we look at how Jesus himself approached the lost. Because if you want to learn how to win souls, the best place to start is by watching the one who did it perfectly.

Jesus Used Three Distinct Approaches to Reach People

Approach One: He started with their need, not his message

John 4 records Jesus sitting at a well in Samaria when a woman came to draw water. He did not open with a theological statement. He asked her for a drink. A simple, human, need-based request that put her at ease and opened a natural conversation. He started where she was. With her thirst. Her daily routine. Her familiar environment. And from that single point of genuine human contact he moved naturally to the living water she had never considered. That is the first lesson in soul winning. Meet people at their actual point of need before you introduce them to the one who meets it. People do not resist genuine interest in their lives. They resist feeling like a project.

Approach Two: He went to where people were, not where they should have been

Luke 19:1-10 records Jesus walking through Jericho, looking up into a sycamore tree and calling Zacchaeus by name. Zacchaeus was a tax collector, despised by his community and excluded from respectable society. He was not in the synagogue. He was up a tree at the edge of the crowd. And Jesus went to him there. He did not wait for Zacchaeus to clean up his life and present himself at a more appropriate venue. He called him out of the tree and invited himself to his house for dinner. Soul winning goes to where people are. In the workplace. At the school gates. In the pub. In the neighbourhood. Where real life is happening. Not only where religious life is scheduled.

Approach Three: He let love be more visible than religion

John 8 records the woman caught in adultery being brought to Jesus by the religious leaders. Every person in that crowd was representing the law. Jesus was the only one representing love. He did not excuse the sin. But he refused to condemn the person. He said neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. The order of those two sentences is everything. He removed the condemnation before he addressed the behaviour. That is the approach of grace. And it is the approach that produces genuine and lasting change. People run toward love and away from condemnation. The soul winner who leads with love, the way Jesus consistently did, will always reach further than the one who leads with judgment.

"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."

Luke 19:10 NIV

A Real World Example: Reinhard Bonnke

Reinhard Bonnke was born in Königsberg, Germany, on 19 April 1940. He felt called to preach the gospel in Africa from the age of ten after a powerful encounter with God. At just eleven years old he was already standing on street corners in Glückstadt sharing the gospel with strangers and experiencing the joy of seeing his first person come to faith. That early practice of going to where people were and speaking plainly about Jesus shaped his entire ministry.

He eventually founded Christ for All Nations and went on to oversee seventy-five million recorded conversions to Christ across the African continent. He died on 7 December 2019 at the age of seventy-nine. But what is most instructive about Bonnke is not the scale of the crowds he eventually addressed. It is that he began on a street corner as an eleven-year-old boy with nothing but a willingness to open his mouth and tell one person what Jesus had done. The principle was identical to the one Jesus modelled. Go to where the people are. Meet them where they are. And let the love of God be the force that draws them rather than the pressure of religious performance.

Conclusion

Soul winning is not a technique. It is a posture. Meet people at their need. Go to where they are. Lead with love rather than judgment. Jesus did all three consistently and it changed the eternal destiny of everyone who encountered him. Bonnke began with one person on a street corner at eleven years old and never stopped. Part 2 will show you exactly how to witness naturally in the specific environments of your everyday life without feeling awkward, pushy or out of place.

A Prayer for Today

Father, give me the eyes of Jesus today. Eyes that see the person up the tree. Ears that hear the thirst behind the question. And a heart that leads with love before it leads with correction. Make me a witness not because I am particularly bold or gifted but because I am genuinely grateful for what you did for me and I cannot keep it to myself any longer. Send me today toward the specific person who needs to hear it. And give me the words when I get there. In Jesus name, Amen.

— Amen

Reflection

  • 1Jesus went to where Zacchaeus was rather than waiting for Zacchaeus to come to the right place. Who is the specific person in your daily life right now, at work, in your street, in your family or in your social circle, who needs someone to go to where they are with genuine love and genuine interest rather than a religious invitation to come to where you are? What is one practical step you could take toward that person this week? "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." Luke 19:10 NIV.
