When You’re Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Scripture: Exodus 14:12–16
There are moments in life when you find yourself in a place you never asked to be—a place where going backward feels tempting and going forward feels impossible. The Israelites knew that feeling well. After witnessing God’s power in Egypt, they suddenly stood trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army. Fear rose so quickly that they questioned Moses, questioned God, and even questioned their own freedom.
They cried, “It would have been better to serve the Egyptians.”
Fear always tries to convince you that bondage is safer than freedom.
But God had not abandoned them. He had led them there. The place that felt like a dead end was actually the place where God planned to reveal His power. The “stuck place” is often where faith is born. When you can’t see a way forward, you learn to trust the God who makes ways where none exist.
Red Sea Moments in Today’s World
People across the world face their own Red Sea moments:
A job loss that threatens stability
A medical report that shakes confidence
A relationship that feels beyond repair
A dream that seems blocked at every turn
A decision where every option feels wrong
In those moments, panic feels natural. Blame feels easy. The familiar—even if harmful—feels safer than the unknown. Many return to old habits, old relationships, old mindsets, simply because fear whispers, “At least you know what to expect there.”
But God wasn’t surprised by Israel’s situation—and He isn’t surprised by yours.
He leads His people into tight places not to crush them, but to show them who He is.
Biblical Examples of God Making a Way
Daniel stood in a lions’ den with no escape route—but God shut the mouths of the lions.
Jehoshaphat faced an army he couldn’t defeat—but God told him, “You will not need to fight this battle.”
The widow in 2 Kings 4 had nothing left but a jar of oil—but God multiplied what she had.
Mary and Martha saw Lazarus die—but Jesus turned the grave into a testimony.
In every story, God waited until the moment when human strength ran out—then He stepped in.
God’s Command Still Stands: “Go Forward.”
God told Moses, “Tell the people to go forward.”
Not because the sea was open.
Not because the danger was gone.
But because God was already working in the unseen.
Faith is not the absence of fear—it is the decision to move even when fear is loud.
Sometimes the next step is small.
Sometimes it’s quiet.
Sometimes it’s simply refusing to go back to what God freed you from.
But every step forward is a declaration:
“God, I trust You more than I trust what I see.”
