A Protection That Began Before You Were Born

Part One looked at the hedge God places around His own, a protection that surrounds a life from the outside. But there is a deeper protection that most believers rarely stop to consider, one that was not built around us but purchased for us. It did not arrive because satan asked permission at some heavenly meeting. It arrived because Jesus died and rose again, and in doing so, He changed the legal standing of every person who would ever put their trust in Him.

This is the part of the gospel that is often sung about at Easter and then quietly filed away for the rest of the year. Yet Hebrews 2:14 to 15 says something so direct that it deserves to be read slowly. Jesus took on flesh and blood specifically so that through death, His own death, He could break the power of the one who held the power of death, and set free everyone who had spent their whole life enslaved by the fear of dying. That is not a promise for the future. It is a description of something already accomplished.

Power Over Death Is Not a Future Hope, It Is a Present Fact

Romans 6:9, in the New King James Version, states it as settled history: Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more, death no longer has dominion over Him. The word dominion is a legal and political word. It means authority, rulership, jurisdiction. Death used to have jurisdiction over every human life. The resurrection did not merely comfort humanity about death, it stripped death of its jurisdiction over everyone who now belongs to Christ.

The Message translation of Romans 6:6 captures the practical weight of this with striking honesty: our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin miserable life, no longer at sin's every beck and call. Notice the word decisive. Not a gradual fading, not a slow improvement, a decisive end. What died on the cross was not simply a body, it was the authority sin and death had over the person you used to be.

This is why the apostle Paul could write, in what many scholars regard as one of the boldest declarations in all of Scripture, that Christ abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. The Amplified Bible renders 2 Timothy 1:10 with unusual force, describing Jesus as the One who broke the power of death and annulled it, making it inoperative, before bringing life and undying existence into full view through the good news. Annulled. Inoperative. Those are not soft, sentimental words. They are the language of a contract that has been torn up and can no longer be enforced.

Eternal Life Is a Possession, Not Only a Destination

Many believers speak of eternal life as something they are waiting for, a reward collected only at the end of the road. Scripture describes it differently. John 5:24, in the New International Version, records Jesus saying that whoever hears His word and believes Him who sent Him has eternal life, is not condemned, and has already crossed over from death to life. The verb tense matters. Not will cross over one day. Has crossed over already.

First John 5:11 to 12 confirms this in the New King James Version: this is the testimony, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son, he who has the Son has life. Eternal life, in other words, is not primarily a length of time. It is a Person possessed. If you have the Son, the verse says plainly, you have the life. This means the confidence a believer carries about death is not wishful thinking about a distant future, it is present ownership of a life that death cannot touch.

Redemption did not only prepare us for eternity. It disarmed death's authority over today.

The Angels Did Not Stop Working After the Resurrection

Part One traced the angel of the Lord encamping around Peter and opening a prison gate in Acts 12. But the resurrection did not close the door on angelic assistance, it opened a new chapter of it, one that looks different because it serves a different purpose. Consider what happened to the apostle Paul on his way to stand trial before Caesar.

Acts chapter twenty seven describes a ship caught in a violent storm the sailors called Euroclydon, a fierce northeaster that battered the vessel for so many days that the sun and stars disappeared and, in the words of verse twenty, all hope that they would be saved was finally given up. In that moment of total human despair, Paul stood up among the frightened crew and passengers and told them something extraordinary. An angel of the God he served had stood beside him that very night and told him plainly, do not be afraid, Paul, you must stand before Caesar, and God has granted you the lives of everyone sailing with you.

What follows is worth noticing carefully, because it teaches something new about how divine protection works. The angel did not calm the storm. The ship still ran aground and broke apart on the rocks near Malta, exactly as the angel had implied it would. Yet Acts 27:44 records that everyone, all two hundred and seventy six people on board according to verse thirty seven, made it safely to land. The protection here was not the removal of the storm. It was the guaranteed outcome inside the storm.

This is a different picture from Peter's sudden, dramatic rescue in Acts 12, and both are equally biblical, equally real, and equally necessary to understand. Sometimes divine protection looks like chains falling off and a gate swinging open. Other times it looks like a ship still breaking apart beneath you while every single person on board walks out alive, because a messenger from God had already told you how the story would end before the worst of it arrived.
