REST IN GOD

Light of The World Today

Why Jesus told busy people to stop, and what he offers instead.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 NIV

Tiredness is one of the few experiences shared by people in every country. Many of us carry long hours, family pressures and a phone that never stops. We have even learned to wear busyness as a badge of honour. Into that world Jesus speaks a gentle sentence, and it is not addressed to the lazy. It is addressed to the weary and burdened, those worn out by effort and loaded down with responsibility.

Jesus Told Busy People to Stop

In Mark 6:30 and 31 the disciples returned from a successful ministry trip and told Jesus everything they had done. So many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat. Jesus said, come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. Notice the timing. The needs had not run out. The crowds were still there, and in verse 33 they followed. Yet Jesus still said stop. Rest does not wait until all the work is finished, because the work is never finished.

Jesus lived this way himself. Luke 5:16 in the NIV says he often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. If the Son of God built regular rest into his life, we are not too important to do the same.

A Yoke Shared, Not a Weight Carried Alone

In Matthew 11:29 Jesus says take my yoke upon you. A yoke was a wooden frame that joined two oxen so they could pull together. When Jesus offers you his yoke, he is not adding a new load. He is stepping alongside you so that you are no longer pulling alone. The Message puts verse 29 this way: learn the unforced rhythms of grace.

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

Matthew 11:29 NIV

Why do we keep declining the invitation? Often it is fear that if we stop, everything will fall apart. Or pride, because it feels good to be needed. Or guilt, because rest feels unproductive. Jesus gently answers all three.

 How to Apply This Today

Take one real stop today: Set aside 60 minutes with no phone and no tasks. Sit quietly and tell Jesus how tired you are.

Hand over what you carry: Name your heaviest worry and give it to God in prayer. First Peter 5:7 in the NIV says cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Choose one regular rest: Decide on a weekly half a day when you step away from work, even if it is small. Put it in your diary as you would any appointment.

Conclusion

Rest is not laziness. It is an invitation from the one who carries the heaviest load, and he offers to walk beside you. Part 2 will look at the practical rhythms that make rest part of ordinary life.

Scripture to pray with: Psalm 23:2 and 3 NIV

Reflection

  • 1What are you afraid would happen if you stopped for one hour, and could you trust God with it? "In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat, for he grants sleep to those he loves." Psalm 127:2 NIV
