Light of the World Today
"I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead."
Philippians 3:10-11 NLT
Paul wrote Philippians 3:10 from prison. He had already walked with Jesus for decades. He had planted churches, performed miracles and written half the New Testament. And yet his deepest longing was still this. To know Christ more. Not to know more about him. To know him. Personally. Experientially. The way you know someone you have spent real time with, been genuinely honest with and allowed to shape everything about how you live. That quality of knowing is not the starting point of the Christian life. It is the daily pursuit of it. And it is available to every one of us right now, in the exact season we are in, if we are willing to build the specific daily habits that make it real.
How to Build the Relationship Daily
Pray three times daily without fail
Daniel 6:10 in the NIV says Daniel got down on his knees three times a day and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. He did not pray when he felt like it. He prayed consistently, morning, afternoon and evening, as a fixed and non-negotiable commitment. Psalm 55:17 in the NIV records David saying evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress and he hears my voice. Three moments in the day. Three anchors. Each one a deliberate return to the presence of God regardless of how full or how pressured the hours between them have been. Relationships grow in regular contact. Three daily conversations with Jesus will change the quality of your life in ways that weekly or occasional prayer simply cannot produce.
Meditate on the Word, not just read it
Psalm 1:2-3 in the NIV says whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season. Meditation is not speed-reading a chapter to complete a plan. It is taking one verse, one passage or one truth and sitting with it long enough for it to move from information in the mind to conviction in the heart. Ask what this means for your life specifically. Ask what Jesus is saying to you personally through it. Let it follow you through the day. That daily practice of meditating on the Word is what produces the rootedness, the fruitfulness and the stability that Psalm 1 describes.
Live a holy life because he is holy
1 Peter 1:15-16 in the NLT says now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say you must be holy because I am holy. Holiness is not an old fashioned idea that belongs to a different generation. It is the specific quality of life that makes you genuinely distinct from the world around you. And it shows up not in dramatic gestures but in the quiet, daily, specific choices that nobody is watching closely. Not gossiping when the conversation invites it. Releasing the grudge that your feelings say you have every right to keep. Refusing to allow bitterness to settle into your thinking about the person who hurt you. Ephesians 4:31-32 in the NIV says get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger. Be kind and compassionate, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you. These are not personality tips. They are the specific interior conditions in which a genuine relationship with Jesus grows. You cannot draw close to the one who is holy while holding on to what holiness has no room for.
Be honest in everything, including with yourself
Proverbs 12:22 in the NLT says the Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth. Honesty is not only about what you say to other people. It begins with what you say to yourself and what you are willing to say honestly to God. The person who is building a genuine relationship with Jesus is the person who has stopped managing the
