Light of the World Today

Receiving Jesus is the most important decision a person ever makes. But there is a question that most people are left with immediately afterwards that nobody quite prepares them for. Now what? The door is open. Jesus has come in. And the next morning arrives looking exactly like the morning before it. Same job. Same pressures. Same habits. The salvation was real. But nobody explained what a relationship with Jesus is supposed to look like in the actual days that follow.
Think about it this way. Meeting someone for the first time is not the same as knowing them deeply. The moment of introduction is real and it matters enormously. But the relationship is built in everything that comes after it. Every conversation. Every honest moment. Every ordinary day where you showed up and discovered more of who they are. Jesus works the same way. Salvation opens the door. The relationship is built in the daily choice to remain in him.
Mary of Bethany: The Woman Who Chose the Better Thing
Luke 10:38-42 records Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus while her sister Martha was busy preparing food for their guests. Martha eventually became frustrated and asked Jesus to send Mary to help. And Jesus said Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed, or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.
Mary's choice was not laziness. It was priority. She was fully present with Jesus over everything else competing for her attention. And busyness, even well-intentioned religious busyness, is one of the most effective substitutes for actual relationship that has ever existed. Mary later became the person who anointed Jesus before his crucifixion, an act so significant that Jesus said it would be remembered wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world. Mark 14:9 NIV. The woman who chose presence over performance became the person whose devotion Jesus said would be remembered for ever.

That is what consistent relationship with Jesus produces. Not religious activity that ticks a box. A depth of knowing that eventually overflows into something extraordinary. And it begins with the same simple decision Mary made. Choosing to be genuinely present with him before anything else in the day demands your attention.
Mary sat at Jesus's feet as a daily, deliberate, counter-cultural choice. She did not know it would produce the most celebrated act of devotion in the Gospel record. She just chose him over everything else asking for her attention that afternoon. That same choice, made consistently in the ordinary mornings of your ordinary life, is what builds the relationship.
