Light of The World Today
"Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, 'Get up and eat.'" 1 Kings 19:5 NIV
Angels protect and guide. Today we see a third part of their ministry that is gentler and just as important. They strengthen and provide for people who have run out of strength. Hebrews 1:14 calls them ministering spirits, and nowhere is that word clearer than in the story of a prophet who had simply had enough.
Elijah: Strength for an Exhausted Prophet
Elijah had just won a great victory on Mount Carmel. Then Jezebel threatened his life, and in 1 Kings 19:3 and 4 he ran into the wilderness, sat under a bush and said, I have had enough, Lord. Take my life. God did not rebuke him. He did not give a sermon. He let Elijah sleep, then sent an angel who touched him and put bread and water by his head.
Then comes the line that matters most. In verse 7 the angel came a second time and said, get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. God knew the limits of his servant. Verse 8 says that strengthened by that food, Elijah travelled forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. Before the next assignment came rest, food and a gentle touch.
"Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him."
Matthew 4:11 NKJV
Jesus: Strength After the Testing
Even Jesus received this kind of help. After forty days of fasting and three rounds of temptation in the wilderness, Matthew 4:11 says angels came and ministered to him. Mark 1:13 in the NIV says the angels attended him. Notice the timing. Strength came after the testing, once he had stood firm. If you have been holding the line under pressure, expect God to send ministry of strength afterwards.
Daniel also needed it. In Daniel 10:19 an angel touched him and said, be strong now, be strong. Daniel replied that he had been strengthened. Sometimes strength comes through a touch, sometimes through a word, and sometimes through the people God sends. If you ever feel as low as Elijah did, please speak to someone you trust or seek professional help. God often sends strength through people.
How to Apply This Today
Treat rest as part of obedience. After a big effort or a spiritual high, sleep properly and eat well. Elijah's first need was bread and sleep, not a new plan.
Be honest with God about being tired. Elijah told God exactly how he felt, and God met him with kindness. You do not have to pretend.
Look for the help after the testing. A timely encouragement, a provision or a word may be God's way of strengthening you. Receive it and give thanks.
Conclusion
God knows when the journey is too much for you. He sends rest, provision and strength through the ministry of angels and through the people he places around you. Part 5 looks at how angels fight and deliver, including the delayed answer in Daniel 10.
