Light of The World Today
"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." 91:11 and 12 NIV
Part 1 showed that angels are created servants, sent by God for those who belong to Christ. So what do they actually do? The first thing Scripture names is protection. Today we look at the promise, the condition attached to it and two remarkable examples.
The Phrase Satan Left Out
In Matthew 4:6 Satan quoted Psalm 91 to Jesus in the wilderness. Look closely and you will see that he dropped three words. The psalm says angels will guard you in all your ways. Satan left out "in all your ways" and used the promise to push Jesus into a reckless leap from the temple. Jesus answered in Matthew 4:7, do not put the Lord your God to the test. The promise covers the person walking in God's ways. It is not a licence to take risks God never asked you to take.
Daniel: Protected While Doing Right
Daniel was thrown into the lions' den for praying, which was the very thing God wanted him to do. At dawn he told the king in Daniel 6:22, my God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. Verse 23 adds that no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. Daniel's protection came while he was being faithful, not while he was being careless.
Peter: Protected in Answer to Prayer
In Acts 12 Peter was chained between two soldiers on the night before his trial, and he was asleep. Verse 5 tells us the church was praying earnestly for him. Then, in verse 7, an angel appeared, a light shone in the cell, he struck Peter on the side and said, quick, get up. The chains fell off Peter's wrists. His peace and the church's prayers were both part of the story.
"The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them." Psalm 34:7 NKJV
Scripture is also honest. Acts 12:2 records that James had been put to death by Herod shortly before Peter was freed. Angelic protection works within God's purposes, and we do not always see the whole picture. But the promise holds. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him.
How to Apply This Today
Walk in all his ways: Do not treat the promise as insurance for foolish choices. Obey God fully, and avoid risks he has not asked you to take.
Pray earnestly for others: Choose someone facing danger or pressure this week and pray for them as the church prayed for Peter.
Rest like Peter: Do what you can, pray, then sleep. Trust is part of protection.
Conclusion
Angels do protect, and the promise is real. It is attached to walking in God's ways, it often comes in answer to prayer and it works within his purposes. Part 3 looks at how angels guide, with examples from Exodus, Philip and Cornelius.
