Light of The World Today
"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands." Job 1:10 NIV
Here is something striking. The clearest statement in the Bible about a hedge of protection was spoken by Satan himself. In Job 1:9 and 10 he complained to God that he could not get at Job, because God had put a hedge around him, his household and everything he had. The NLT says it this way: you have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. The enemy could see the wall. He knew he could not cross it unless God allowed him to.
How Job Lived Inside the Wall
The hedge was God's gift, but Job's life matched it. Job 1:1 describes him as blameless and upright, a man who feared God and shunned evil. Job 1:5 shows that he prayed regularly for his children, offering sacrifices in case they had sinned. He walked closely with God, refused evil and covered his family in prayer. Ecclesiastes 10:8 in the NIV warns that whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake. Walking away from God's boundaries, through secret compromise or deliberate disobedience, means stepping out from under his cover.
What the Hedge Does and Does Not Mean
We should be honest here. Job was blameless and still suffered. The hedge does not promise a life without hardship. What it does promise is limits. In Job 1:12 God told Satan that everything Job had was in his hands, but he must not lay a finger on Job himself. Even in the worst season, the enemy could go only as far as God allowed, and in Job 42:10 the Lord restored Job's fortunes. God sets the boundary, and He is with you inside it.
"I myself will be a wall of fire around it, declares the Lord, and I will be its glory within." Zechariah 2:5 NIV
How to Apply This Today
1. Be a doer of the word, not only a hearer.
James 1:22 in the NIV says do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Choose one instruction from Scripture you already know and have not obeyed, such as forgiving someone, giving, or ending a habit. Do it this week.
2. Close the gaps in your wall.
Ask God to show you one area where you have been compromising, whether a secret habit, a dishonest practice or a relationship that pulls you from him. Confess it and close it. A small gap is still a gap.
3. Pray over your household every day, as Job did.
Say each family member's name out loud and ask God to cover them. Psalm 34:7 in the NIV says the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Do it in the morning before the day begins.
Conclusion
God builds the wall, and he asks us to stay inside it by walking closely with him, obeying his word and praying for those we love. It does not mean no trouble will come, but it does mean nothing can pass beyond what he allows, and he is with you inside it.
