How to Train Your Spirit to Hear from God
God still speaks to those who make room to listen. Discover five biblical habits that will help you recognise His voice and grow closer to Him.

Have you ever wondered whether God is speaking to you, and whether you would recognise His voice?

Many believers long to hear from God more clearly. The good news is that hearing His voice is not reserved for a few special people. Jesus said:

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." (John 10:27)

Just as an athlete trains the body, you can train your spirit. The Bible says mature believers are those "who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil" (Hebrews 5:14).

Here are five biblical habits that will help you grow in spiritual discernment.

1. Fill your heart with God's Word

God will never contradict what He has already spoken in Scripture.

"Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)

The more you read the Bible, the more familiar God's voice becomes. Start with a Psalm or a chapter from John's Gospel each day, asking the Lord to teach you as you read.

2. Make time to be still

Life is noisy, but God's guidance is often recognised in quiet moments.

"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

Elijah did not encounter God in the wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12).

Put the phone aside for a few minutes each day. Quieten your heart and give God your attention.

3. Pray, then listen

Prayer is not only speaking to God. It is also learning to listen.

Young Samuel responded to God's call by saying:

"Speak, for Your servant hears." (1 Samuel 3:10)

Bring your questions, concerns and decisions to God. Then wait quietly before Him. The Holy Spirit helps believers understand God's guidance and reminds us of Christ's words (John 14:26).

Write down Scriptures, thoughts or impressions that align with God's Word.

4. Test what you hear

Not every thought comes from God.

"Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God." (1 John 4:1)

God's voice will always agree with Scripture, point you towards Jesus, and produce wisdom, peace and obedience.

When you are unsure, seek counsel from mature Christians who can help you discern wisely.

5. Obey what God says

Spiritual hearing becomes sharper through obedience.

"Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it.'" (Isaiah 30:21)

When God shows you something through His Word or by His Spirit, respond in faith. Every act of obedience helps you grow in confidence and sensitivity to His leading.

Draw Near to Him Today

God is not trying to hide from you.

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." (James 4:8)

As you spend time in His Word, seek Him in prayer, listen carefully and walk in obedience, you will learn to recognise His voice more clearly.

Father, I want to know You more deeply and hear Your voice more clearly. Fill my heart with Your Word, guide me by Your Holy Spirit, and give me the courage to obey what You show me. Draw me closer to You each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Remember: The goal is not simply to hear God's voice, but to know God Himself. As your relationship with Him grows, your spirit becomes more sensitive to His leading.

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." (John 10:27)

Key Points

  • God speaks primarily through His Word and by His Holy Spirit. The more you fill your heart with Scripture and spend time in prayer, the more familiar God's voice becomes. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." (John 10:27)
  • Spiritual discernment grows through listening and obedience. As you learn to test what you hear against Scripture and obey God's guidance, your spirit becomes more sensitive to His leading. "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it.'" (Isaiah 30:21) Remember: The goal is not simply to hear God's voice, but to know God Himself and follow Him more closely every day.
